I'd always assumed that he kept it on a chain only when not wearing it... but that leads to the question of how he manages to put it on so quickly, e.g. when he's being menaced by Boromir, which doesn't seem compatible with pulling a chain over his head or fiddling with a clasp. But in chapter two, he clearly says that he keeps it on a chain to stop it slipping off while he's wearing it, which does seem quite awkward. Anyway, it was such fun to hand all these niggles over to Merry and Pippin, and let them loose on them. Glad you enjoyed the story!
