To be honest, I think that the movies make the chain issue even more of a problem than it is in the books, since they quite clearly show the Ring as being threaded onto a chain, and equally clearly show Frodo putting it on with no chain in sight, without any sign of having unthreaded it. But, then, necklace chains are ALWAYS strange in films. One of my pet niggles is the way that, in movies, a pendant can always be removed with a single sharp tug. I have to admit that I've never gone round tugging at people's pendants to verify this, but I'm fairly sure that if I did, all that would happen would be that the wearer would go "ow!" Clearly chains are different in Fictionland.
