I'm not sure whether you've come across it or whether this is just a case of great minds thinking alike, but Dawn recently wrote a brilliant story about Pengolodh's stay in Khazad-dum and finding some unexpected Feanorian data there was precisely what he did--as also unexpected insight into the Dwarvish view of things, obviously! (If in fact, you haven't come across it, it's called "Song of Stone" and was posted to the LOTR genfic community.) That I've recently read this story is probably part of the reason why I couldn't seem to find a way to work the Khazad-dum angle in properly here.
