Courage

Glorfindel was led through a passageway, one side of a square enclosing a central courtyard where raised beds awaited spring plantings. "This Elrond, he believes in a future?"

Erestor stopped, turned and looked at the twice-born warrior. "Without hope for a future, what use is fighting? Even the sons of Fëanor held hope. Unfortunately, evil seems to be a force never fully eradicated.

"Come. Join me for a meal in my room. My hours are erratic so the kitchen sends soup and bread to my room. We can speak more after food."

They resumed walking. In a back passageway, doors lined the hallway. Erestor stopped, opened one, and ushered Glorfindel in. "Welcome to my small but cozy home."

Inside, Glorfindel slowly looked around. The single room was rectangular featuring a hearth against the outside wall and a bed positioned at the far end along the short wall. A covered chamber pot was under the bed and soft tapestries decorated the walls. A screen concealed a small dressing area. A scholar's desk was near the single narrow window, positioned to catch the sunlight. Pots of ink and sharpened quills stood in glazed containers on a nearby shelf.

Erestor dished soup from a warmed vessel nestled near the hearth, handing one bowl to his visitor. The two settled on a woven carpet and began eating.

"Without doubt you have great courage," Erestor began after the edge of hunger was eased. "Only an elf with an iron will could have faced the Balrog. Of course we can use you as a warrior, but would you prefer a different assignment?"

Glorfindel's eyebrows raised. "Different?"

"Perhaps you would prefer to be a teacher, a cook, or a gardener?"

"I was a horse breeder in Gondolin, living happily with my wife and children. Death changed everything."
