Summary: Gil-galad takes Elendil and Elrond to the Emyn Beraid for the first time.

Lindon. S.A.3430.

“Elrond, Elendil, come journey with me. I have something to show you.”

Ereinion sat bareback astride a horse, carrying supplies enough for several weeks’ travel. Only in the past month had he and Elendil finalized their agreement, allying Men and Elves against Sauron.

“Now, Gil-galad? Minas Ithil is fallen, and even now Sauron looks toward both my kingdom and yours.” Elendil said.

“The darker the night, the brighter the candle. Come, I think it will do your heart good.”

Together the three rode east. For many days they travelled, until they came unto a land of rolling green hills. Elrond noted three white towers rising from the hills.

“You have a palantir with you, do you not?” Ereinion asked.

“Always. My remaining links to the land of my fathers are few.” Elendil said.

“Let us set it in the top of the tallest tower and see what visions it brings us.”

Elendil did as the elven king bade him. As he reverently set the Seeing Stone in place, his whole body stilled.

“What do you see?” Elrond asked.

“ I see...the work of Osse and Uinen. And Númenor. At least, the place where Númenor once was. Why did Ar-Pharazon have to be such a fool? Is this the lot of mortal man, ever to seek greater power and longer life, and to lose both along with all honour?”

“My brother would be proud of you.” Elrond said. “For all the island’s loss would have grieved him. It is a balm to my heart, that some of his descendants yet remain Faithful.”

Elendil eased himself away from the Seeing Stone and looked toward the herald.

“Too few, I fear, and liable to fall to Sauron’s might, unless the Valar intervene.”

“They will intervene. Not directly, perhaps, but they have not forgotten those who yet dwell in Middle Earth.”

“What sympathy should the Valar have for the Men of the West, when it was our people that attacked their lands?”

“Your father must have thought well enough of them. He went to intercede for us, even as my father did an age ago.”

Gil-galad broke in. “And they set your father’s star in the sky as a sign. We are not forgotten. Look into the stone again. Look to the West.”

Elendil did so, with Elrond looking over his shoulder. For a brief moment, they glimpsed the shores of Avallónë, where the master stone abode.

“Perhaps it is a sign.” Elendil said. “Sauron may be the death of it yet, but there is yet hope for Arda. As long as the Valar keep watch on our lands, I cannot believe that they will fully fall to darkness.”

“And Ilúvatar watches over us all.” Elrond added.

Lovely. When all else fails there is hope.

As long as hope still holds, evil will not conquer all.

Hi! Sorry to bother you, but as tagging assistant this year, I've been going through and tagging the entries, and I'm not sure which prompt your story is for. If you can let me know, I'll put the right tag on it. Thanks! :)

All right, that should be enough for me to track it down. Thank you! (And sorry for briefly interrupting your comment section.)
