Summary: For Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves, and he gave her the likeness of a great white bird, and upon her breast there shone as a star the Silmaril, as she flew over the water to seek Eärendil her beloved. On a time of night Eärendil at the helm of his ship saw her come towards him, as a white cloud exceeding swift beneath the moon, as a star over the sea moving in strange course, a pale flame on wings of storm. (The Silmarillion, "Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath")

Wow, I really like this! The contrast of the ocean and the sky really gives a sense of storm. You've also given a sense of focus -- Elwing looks very determined to me. (I've also seen a range of bird species for her, but I think I like her best as a seagull.)

Vingilot is certainly looking properly lost on that huge ocean. ("Send help!")
And Elwing is clearly going: Ye, utuvienyes!
Well, in her mind, because if she opened her beak, she would drop the jewel, like in the fable of the raven and the cheese.
And also not in Quenya, I suppose.
I really like how the two are linked by patches of light in that expanse of watery darkness.
(Poor gull, I suspect her beak hurts after that long flight... And her new wings, too.)

Thank you so much! Elwing should look determined (although I can't claim to have given her anything - if it comes across through her posture, that's thanks to the reference I used), so I'm glad she looks like that to you. At this point, she must be running on determination alone!

I'm thrilled you like the small boat, not just because it was a pain to try and give it any detail (because it really is tiny) so it's still recogniseable as a boat rather than just a blob, but also because the sentiment of "the ocean so vast and my ship so small" somehow really resonates with me and applies to Eärendil at this stage. (Of course, "space so vast and my ship so small" may not really be better...) Elwing must have been very patient and very determined indeed to keep on searching for that tiny speck on the waves.

"Send help!" indeed! Even on a bigger ship, the ocean is so midboggingly huge. I can't fathom how people ever dared to cross it in teeny tiny nutshells (and without sonar or GPS). So yes, Vingilot should certainly look lost.
I suspect Elwing is beyond wanting to speak (or even think articulated thoughts) at this point. We are told she dropped down exhausted as soon as she'd found the boat. While that initially sounds a bit soppy, I find it pretty believable, like victims of a car crash who somehow just keep going and doing stuff while under shock but as soon as they realise they're safe, break together. Add to that the knowledge of what she left behind and the confusion of suddenly having wings... it must have been draining experience all around!
