He's my favorite character in the show. I doubt Maglor and he will be together in any fic beyond this; if I end up writing Kanan again, it won't be a crossover.

Kanan did not know. At this point in time, he is actively avoiding the Force and pretending that it doesn't exist. If he was using the Force, he would have known, but as he wasn't, he didn't. (Maglor is a teensy bit less cautious about using the Force, but still incredibly careful when he does. If any of the Inquistors sense him, it would be Not Good.)
Given Leia called Han a "scruffy-looking nerf herder" in ESB, a nerf is definitely a land animal of some kind.
