Summary:In the early morning, shortly before Haldir must return to his Marchwarden duties, they meet and reminisce about their first meeting, which of course leads to a small bit of reenactment in Thranduil's study.

EVEN VANILLA CAN HAVE HEAT

"It's almost time for you to return to Lothlórien."

Haldir faced the open air, leaning at the narrow window in what passed for Thranduil's workroom, elbows on the sill. His head remained immobile, his eyes directed across the mists of the dawn below in the darkness of the caldera. The first birds of morning had started to trill their welcome to the sun. He breathed in deeply and turned to face his host.

"Yes. My Lord and Lady expect me back soon. I have, at most, one more day and night."

The King approached, stopped, and gazed intently at his guest. "What were you seeking in the mist?"

A cut-off laugh gave way to a sigh. "Memories, Master." He returned to the window. "Do you remember when we first met?"

"Oh yes." Thranduil moved to stand next to his lover, resting his hand at the base of his spine. "It was mid-afternoon and I was at the lakeshore. Ahead, across a channel of water, was an abandoned ruin rumored to have been built by Noldoran exiles. If it had ever appeared on a map, it was on none I had seen. It stood there, defiant in fallen glory. I was younger, I was much more foolish, and I wanted to explore."

Haldir took up the story, a far-away look in his bright blue eyes. "I was on the opposite side of the ruin, where there was a causeway, flooded in parts by lake water but still passable on foot. I was the advance scout that day, my brothers a few hours behind me. I was looking at the fallen stones and that single tall balustrade, deciding whether to wait to explore them until the next day, when I saw a quick gleam of pale golden hair through an arrow slit. I had to see who or what was within."

"I'm still glad you made that decision," Thranduil said, turning Haldir around so that they faced each other. "I was beset by several large spiders and was hard-pressed. Likely I would have succeeded in defeating them all, but having an ally, a second blade, made quick work of the enemy that day."

"Did we keep score that time?" Haldir asked. "We've fought side-by-side many times since that first meeting, and we often keep score, but I don't recall if we did this first time."

"I don't think so," Thranduil moved closer and whispered into his ear. "But you took my breath away. So beautiful, so deadly." He stroked firmly down Haldir's cheek, then he moved his thumb moved across the top of his companion's ear, from whorl to tip.

Haldir's breath caught and he pulled into Thranduil's embrace. Thranduil whispered, "We do not always need bindings, punishment and roles. Sometimes vanilla is even better." Their lips met in a kiss that deepened and the world around them faded away from their awareness. Their focus shifted to the taste and feel of the one they held so dear.
