B2MeM Challenge: b15: Rangers of the North: Annúminas
Format: Drabble
Genre:
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Characters: Pelendur
Pairings: None
A/N: After I had written it, I realized it does not exactly match the prompt. I propose that, since Aranarth is the founder of the rangers, this sort of matches (?)
Summary: Of blood and bloodlines.

"He is the heir of Elendil," from Dol Amroth, "Whether you want to acknowledge it or not."

"Of Elendil, perhaps, but not of Anárion." Pelargir.

"Elendil supersedes Anárion. His son is heir to both." The Warden.

"Through the third child. And a daughter, at that." Pinnath Gelin.

"The blood is the same." Lossarnach. "Son or daughter."

Pelendur surveyed the faces around him with that stare that had matched Kings before, took his time, lingered.

"Annúminas is but a ruin. As is the rest of Elendil's legacy in the North." A pause. "Will you see him do the same to Gondor?"

"On the death of Ondoher and his sons, Arvedui of the North-kingdom claimed the crown of Gondor, as the direct descendant of Isildur, and as the husband of Fíriel, only surviving child of Ondoher. The claim was rejected. In this Pelendur, the Steward of King Ondoher, played the chief part." (Appendix A, RotK)

Oh ouch! I think you chose a good way to approach the prompt.

Pelendur has a good deal to answer for, it has always struck me. He could have done so much to heal breaches and protect both south and north, but instead chose a more distant heir, leading in time to the loss of the line of kings completely within Gondor.
