Maglor does need that promised lesson from Daeron. But for many the threat of death reawakens a delight in life, as appears to have happened here.

Yes, it happened back then with Captain Cook, and now with the prospect of learning how to fly. Maglor can't stay for longer at the university as he is not aging, so it's like death and rebirth for him.
