Summary: Fingon tames an eagle, with a special purpose in mind.


It takes twelve years for the eagle to understand that Fingon means no harm in feeding her, and another until she lets the elf approach with meat before rushing into flight. This bird is no Thorondor, yet patience makes her an exception nonetheless. Fingon's right hand soon bears scars other than from Helcaraxë, but he repays her with the hospitality of the Eldar, rebutting any asking if he'll sell her. At Mereth Aderthad he bears her on his hand to Maedhros, speaking quietly.

"We'll teach her to fly the way to Himring, for bearing secrets we don't want to publish."

Clever, and then he also owes a great deal of gratitude to one particular (plus, Fingon says, eagles are far harder to attack than homing pigeons.) ;) Thanks! ^^

I love this. The Hopi Indians feed eaglets, hand-raising them for a variety of purposes. I think the challenge will be to teach the eagle to act as a large and fluffy homing pigeon.

Thank you! :) Many cultures actually use eagles for various purposes; I know Mongol hunters both raise and tame Golden Eagles for traditional hunting (though of course raising them among humans is preferred). Whether or not it's possible to use her for messaging, I have no idea, but Elves have a way with animals, so... who knows?
