Reactions Upon Departure

Maedhros came crashing through the door to my room, trying unsuccessfully to close the door behind him. I looked up in surprise – my cousin was always controlled, every action was done with forethought. This time he had been focused only on getting through the door, as evidenced by the splintered door frame and bent closing pin. As I watched, he walked into the center of the room, and then suddenly he was sitting on the ground. As I looked at him, he pulled his knees up to his face, put his arms around them, and buried his head against his legs.

“She's gone!” he said, muffled against knees. “She's gone, 'Kano. How could she do this? How could she leave us?”

Of course I knew who he meant. Things had been rocky between Fëanáro and Nerdanel for several years now, since they had lost their eighth child before it had been born. For many couples, the loss of a child can pull them together, make them stronger. For Fëanáro and Nerdanel, the loss of this child had put a wedge into their relationship that seemed destined to increase the distance between the two of them more and more as time went on.

I arose from my desk chair and walked over to my cousin. He had always been the strong one, the one who comforted me over many years of skinned knees and broken arms. Now I could finally return the favor.

Kneeling beside him, I gently took his shaking shoulders into my arms, pulling him closer when his legs were released and straightened. His arms went around me. “Russa, you're strong. It will be all right, you'll see.” I rocked him gently and kissed his forehead before once again merely holding him against me, my cheek against his hair. It was something I had wanted to do for many years, but right now I needed to concentrate on the needs of my cousin, not my own desires.

“It was like a knife turning in the heart of my father,” Russa whispered. “He has closed himself up in the forge and nobody can enter or disturb him, not even Grandfather or Helyanwë.” He looked up at me, tears standing in his beautiful blue eyes, but not falling for he would never admit to that much weakness. “How could she do this to us? Could she not see what it would do to him?”

“Perhaps she felt she had no choice, Russa.” I responded, looking at the grief of one I loved. “Perhaps she felt that if she stayed, he would pull her into his madness and neither of them would ever emerge.”

I pulled him close again, continuing to hold him, and a short time later his lips sought mine and mine sought his. His father might not be there for him, and his mother might have left, but I swore to myself that I would be his always. I murmured words of love into his ear as I caressed him, and heard his words return mine with joy. As long as we had each other, we would never be alone.

A/N In my AU I speculate that Nerdanel and Fëanáro fell apart after trying for an eighth child – a daughter this time. Because she had a miscarriage both parents feel guilt and their lack of communication ends up driving them apart.

This is wonderful. I enjoyed it immensely. First, Maedhros/Fingon = ♥

Second, I love your idea that Feanor and Nerdanel split because of their lost child - a daughter no less.

Third, because you brought this up - that Feanor and Nerdanel had seven sons but no daugher. The loss of one would surely have been devastating.

Definitely the loss of a child can cause major problems. Alas for Nerdanel and Feanaro.
