B2MeM Challenge: B-14 – Sons of Feanor – The Twins are NOT Best Friends
Format: Ficlet
Genre: Humor
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Characters: Maitimo, Nerdanel, Amrod, Amras
Pairings: None
Word Count: 388
Summary: The twins have a disagreement about who gains possession of a stuffed animal and Maitimo deals with the aftermath, sharing the story with the rest of the family. A bit of baby fluff.
Best of Friends, Worst of Enemies
Nerdanel sighed, hearing cries from the nursery again. The twins were teething and restless, their cries regularly causing the rest of the household to lose sleep. But the sad noises usually equated with “I’m lonely/hungry/wet come keep me company/feed me/change me” had suddenly changed to shrieks of outrage with an undertone of pain.
“I’ll go, Mother, you sit” said Maitimo pushing his mother back down into her chair as he got up from the table and headed out of the kitchen door towards the nearby nursery. The family heard the low and soothing tone of his voice as he entered the room with the screaming twins. After a short time he reappeared in the kitchen doorway, one twin in each arm and a stuffed wolf trailing cotton from an amputated leg entrapped by his belt.
“You should have seen them, Mother,” he laughed as he passed one twin over to her while entertaining the other. “Amrod had managed to wiggle out of his bed and climb down onto the floor. He moved over to the toy box and pulled out the wolf which he brought over to Amras who grabbed it and wouldn’t let go. They were pulling it apart as I walked in, neither one willing to give an inch to the other one.”
He reached down to his belt, pulling the injured wolf from his belt and handed it to Curufinwë who began to examine the damage. He would repair it and, sometime later, it would be returned to the twins again.
“We’ll have to watch them as they grow then,” Nerdanel responded, smiling tiredly. “With this kind of beginning, they will either be the best of friends or the worst of enemies, but there will be no middle ground between them.”
Maitimo reached up and rescued his side braid from being gummed to death and commented, “Then we’ll just have to make sure they are the best of friends, because if they are tearing stuffed animals apart when they are friends, just think of how destructive they could become if they were enemies.”
The family burst out laughing and the two little terrors looked at each other in bewilderment. Then, catching the feelings of mirth, they smiled broadly and, shrieking, joined the merriment with their own tones added to that of their brothers and mother.

Thank you for this, Erulisse! I love how you wrote the baby twins, and how the family reacted to their babyish antic(s). I'm terribly stuck with my Ambarussa short story right now, and your vignette helped lighten the mood a lot a lot.
