Summary: Glorfindel is illustrating a picture featuring his friend Ecthelion assuming an unusual pose.
Assuming the Position
Glorfindel steadied his easel, anchoring it more firmly against the capricious breezes of the upper levels of Gondolin. He had been planning this painting of Ecthelion in detail for several days, finally choosing the perfect backdrop. It featured the King's Tower surrounded by fluffy clouds in the blue sky and also had some of the green, verdant plains below the city hinted at in the bottom third of the canvas. The day before he had used pastels to flesh in the background, now he only awaited his model.
Ecthelion walked into the courtyard. Spying Glorfindel, he raised his hand in greeting, moving briskly over to join the golden-haired artist.
“So, my friend,” Ecthelion said after the basic courtesies had been exchanged. “Where would you like me to position myself?”
Glorfindel pointed with his paintbrush. “Up against the stones of the defensive wall please, 'Thel.”
His friend removed his tunic and boots, placing them in a neat pile next to the artist. He then moved to the nearby wall and seated himself, folding his legs into a specific pattern.
“'Thel, what is that position called again?”
“The lotus,” was the response.
