B14: AU Card: The Dragon has fallen - Dís leads her people to Erebor

Summary: Dís, now the leader of her people on the way to Erebor, rests in Rivendell.


The trek stutters onward, but Rivendell receives them kindly, and lets them rest. Dís is eyed with wonder – among her following the first: Her husband fell in battle, and now all men of rank lie dead; the company, and Dain, too. All but the Hobbit, who survived by chance. The Battle of Five Armies ended in bloody slaughter, thus leaving her to rule. Grief had her rend her beard and clothing, but now she speaks much with the Evenstar – for she, too, knows bereavement at the hands of orcs, and if people marvel at unlikely friendship, let them.

What a sad AU! And knowing Tolkien, I wonder if it might not have happened just that way, had The Hobbit not been classified as a children's book. He knew, none better, the likely outcome of such a battle as he described...

And what a lovely character pairing!

That's an interesting thing to wonder - though I cannot very much see him give a dwarf lady the lead, however exceptional the circumstances.
