There are times when one wants to read something lighter and happier and this delightful story is one of the best to be found.
It begins as Bilbo is faced with caring for a very young Frodo one afternoon. Uncertain what to do or how to entertain the child, Bilbo decides to tell Frodo of his adventures in Mirkwood.
The Dwarves and Bilbo quickly run into trouble as they journey through Mirkwood. They have been marching for several days and have managed to avoid alerting the Elves to their presence. All of this changes when they are faced with no way to cross the Enchanted River. In an attempt to secure a boat to cross the river, Bombur falls in – and the trouble soon begins.
It is there that they are first discovered by the Elves, notably Legolas and two of his closest friends. (In this story, Thranduil has three sons, of whom Legolas is the youngest, and also a daughter, who is even younger than Legolas.
The young Elves are hardly pleased to discover such a large party of Dwarves travelling in the forest, and so Legolas and his companions decide to follow them. Things remain at a standoff until the autumn feasting begins, and the hungry Dwarves are drawn to the lights and sound of merrymaking.
Thorin is captured first and brought before Thranduil, who fears that he has a very good idea of why the Dwarves are travelling through Mirkwood. But Thorin refuses to say anything of value, and so Thranduil decides to throw him into one of the cells.
The other Dwarves are soon captured as well, and an invisible Bilbo follows them using his ‘magic ring’ into the Royal residence – and then things become even more complicated as Bilbo begins his adventures in the Hall of the Wood Elf King..
