Summary: Thorin Oakenshield's thoughts on the eve of his leaving to retake the Lonely Mountain

Leaving the Hills Behind

Thorin Oakenshield walked out through the large, bronze-bound doors of his Hall. Although there was great beauty in the large delving behind the doors, as well as a rich history going back to his grandfather, King Thrór and even earlier, he was restless and no longer wished to live in these poor lodgings in exile. Beauty, heritage, family or other ties to the Blue Hills meant nothing to him any more. His thoughts and dreams were pinned on a single hill – a mountain. Nay, not 'a' mountain, 'the' mountain - the Lonely Mountain.

Here, in the past long ago but never forgotten, his ancestors had held sway. Here they had ruled, built and delved, accumulating both a vast treasure and a sprawling dwelling that extended deep into the very roots of the mountain itself. Here, although he had never walked its halls himself, lay his heart. He had studied the maps since he was a youth. He knew every corridor, every turn and twist, and every doorway. Now he was finally ready to begin the quest to reclaim that which was his by right.

He reviewed his plans one more time. His companions had gathered and were ready to leave in the morning. The Wizard had arrived, and he had been assured that the final member of their party, the burglar, would be picked up along the way. The weapons were sharpened, the rations were packed, and the armor was strengthened and repaired. All was in readiness.

He turned and looked at the hill behind him. He would not be sorry to be leaving the Blue Mountains behind him at dawn. Tomorrow he would begin his reign as King Under the Mountain. Nodding with satisfaction, he returned to his halls for the last time. Tomorrow would be a bright dawn and a new beginning for Middle Earth.

Maybe next time you'll draw beautiful dwarves. Have you seen their pictures for The Hobbit?

There's nothing like dwarvish ambition! What an interesting read. :)
