B2MeM Challenge Beasty:Oliphaunt, Aspects of Aragorn:King & Rangers of the North: Aranarth (G59)
Format: Ficlet
Genre: General
Rating: G
Warnings:  None
Characters: Aragorn, Sam
Pairings: NA
Summary: Thoughts on kingship
Authors Notes: This has taken forever to finish – blame real life and its distractions. Somewhat tenuous to two of the prompts but is what the muse gave me. She also kicked me over the head today and told me to get this one and one for Day 27 finsihed - which I have done.

Sam looked at interest at the items in the King’s House that Strider told him had been carved from the tusk of an oliphaunt. He had been fascinated by those mystical creatures since he had first heard the poem about them back when he was a faunt in the Shire. Now he had seen one and apparently there had been many at the battle before the walls of this great city.

Stood beside his friend Aragorn reflected on the fact that he was now King and could show these treasures to his friends. When he had seen these small figures carved, he guessed, in Harad many years ago he knew he had to show them to Sam. So to the amazement in some ways of his guards and indeed nobles he had wandered down the house in the sixth circle where the rest of the surviving Fellowship were living. There he invited Sam to come with him to see what the latest wonder he had found in his new home. In some ways he wished he could join the Fellowship in their house rather than live his somewhat lonely existence in the Kings House in the Citadel. But at least he could share his discoveries with them and take joy in the time he spent with them. For many years like his fore-fathers back to Aranarth he had been the Chieftain of the Dúnedain rather than King. So his style was somewhat familiar to those he considered friends and nothing like that of the steward who had preceded him as ruler of Gondor.

I imagine that it was quite a re-education of the guards when Strider became the King instead of Denethor acting as Steward.
