In just a few hours, I will be posting the first challenge for B2MeM 2013! We welcome and encourage our participants to post their creations (or links to their creations) on this community. As a bit of history, B2MeM was and continues to be an annual "holiday" for the entire Tolkien fandom. It is run each year by a handful of groups, but all are welcome, whether they are a part of those groups or not. However, because those groups have their own specialties, then there is a narrow but not insignificant range of stories written for B2MeM that would not be able to find a home on any of the sponsoring communities. For that reason, we created this community. All Tolkien-based work created for B2MeM is welcome here, but we ask that you please use the posting format below out of courtesy to your groupmates, so that readers know what a story will likely hold in store before clicking to read and can select content they're likely to enjoy.

  • make the title of the post the title of your piece and your penname, e.g., "Frodo's Big Quest" by FrodoFan and

  • use the header below and use an LJ-cut. Simply copy the HTML below, paste it at the top of your story, and fill in the information for each item. If you are linking to a story on another site, use the header as well.

B2MeM Challenge: identify the challenge the piece was created for, e.g., the archetypes theme for Day 1 of B2MeM 2013

Format: short story, drabble, photomanip, poem, sketch, et cetera
Genre: general, adventure, romance, horror, mystery, humor, et cetera
Rating: use either the G-NC17 or General, Teens, or Adult system
Warnings: include reasonable warnings for content readers might wish to avoid, e.g., violence, blood and gore, graphic sex, profane language, et cetera
Characters: a list of important characters featured in your piece
Pairings: a list of any important pairings in your piece
Summary: a brief synopsis of what the piece is about

[livejournal.com profile] indy1776, our intrepid tagging mod, has written a post about how to tag your posts here. If you're comfortable adding your own tags, please do, as tagging is a huge effort for our volunteers.

Any questions throughout the challenge, feel free to comment here, PM me, or email me at DawnFelagund@gmail.com.

And so it begins! Below the cut is the first day's challenge for B2MeM 2013.

A reminder about this year's format ... Every year, we mod-types struggle to offer a challenge that meets the needs of those who like to write or create something every day, those who want to write one or a few longer pieces, and everyone in between. This year, [livejournal.com profile] keiliss made a suggestion that we really liked because it helped us to do just that.

  • On the first day of the challenge (today!), we will offer a wealth of prompts to get everyone started. If you want to write a longer piece, hopefully one of these will inspire you to get started! If you like to write something short every day, grab one or a few that you like and run with it! We have collected twenty-six quotes based around twenty-six different themes.

  • In the days that follow, we will post additional prompts. You may use and combine these however you wish. Use them to create something new or shape your longer work in a new direction. You are not, of course, required to use any particular prompts offered. If you want to work with just one prompt for the whole month, that's perfectly acceptable. If you only have time for one piece, you're just as welcome as if you had time for one hundred. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of using the prompts how they work best for you. The goal for this month is to encourage creativity in the Tolkien fandom. Each will arrive at that goal by her or his own road! :)

Remember, you can combine prompts to your heart's content, and there are no deadlines this year, so feel free to revisit prompts you might have missed.

This year's challenge is a scavenger hunt. First, locate the quote in the books, then we encourage you to read the section around it or even the full chapter that contains it. Use that reading as your inspiration. Your piece does not have to include the scene the quote comes from. You might create something to do with a character in the scene, the place the scene is set, the theme, the time period in history, or whatever inspires you about that section of the book. And who knows what else you might discover during the search that tickles your muses!

Without further ado, the first day's prompts lie beneath the LJ cut. Please click the second cut for the HTML codes for today's icons (the ones pictured with the prompts, plus many more!), kindly made by Lyra and Nath.
