Below the cut, you will find the "answers" to this year's scavenger hunt prompts, i.e., from where in the books the quotes were taken. Please note that this post in no way "closes" the community to future posts based on the 2013 prompts! You're welcome to continue sharing your 2013 stories and art as you finish them.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] angelica_ramses for putting the list together and to [livejournal.com profile] ford_of_bruinen for doing the HTML formatting for posting on LJ.

Stories and art posted in April 2013 )

For those writers/artists to whom it might concern: please no worries for those who are still writing to this year’s prompts and challenges, I will update this post throughout this month when I get the chance.

If you have written something for B2MEM2013 this year, but it is posted elsewhere? Feel free to leave a comment on this entry with the link so that our readers can find you.

Happy reading, writing and creating!

For the first time we're hosting a B2MEM reading week. We hope to encourage reading and commenting on B2MeM stories and artwork. This special week will run April 1 through 7.

Reading Week guidelines can be found here, and the reading week banners can be found here. But it's pretty straightforward: read, comment, claim banner! :)

But how do I go about finding all these magnificent pieces? To make things easier on you, we've made a list of all the stories written for B2MeM 2013 to this community and organised them by day. Unfortunately we had to split it up in two posts. If you have written something for B2MEM2013 this year, but it is posted elsewhere? Just leave a comment with the link so that our readers can find you.

! New: A compilation of stories posted to this month throughout April 2013 !

Believe it or not, we have just a little over a week in B2MeM left! March always goes by so quickly, and this year, I cannot blame all of the BINGO stamping. ;)

Some of you may remember that we're doing things a little differently this year to end our B2MeM season, based on feedback from participants. Firstly, March 31 is our final B2MeM wildcard day, and we have something special planned for the last day. It's a surprise, but keep an eye out for March 31's post, if you think you might be interested in one final day of writing, drawing, and creating for B2MeM.

This year, we are also setting aside the first week of April as a Reading Week. Because we are often so focused during March on creating our own pieces, it is easy to miss checking out the stories and art that are created each year by other participants. Reading Week is an official excuse to put off laundry, organizing your desk, and those other real-life obligations that you've been neglecting during March for one more week, so that you can read and comment on other pieces created for this year's B2MeM. Guidelines for Reading Week were posted with this year's B2MeM rules. If you need a reminder or missed them the first time around, please see below the cut for how to participate.

Reading Week Guidelines )

Finally, I will have less online availability during the final days of the event than usual, beginning March 29. I will be checking in daily but may take a bit longer to respond than usual. Rhapsody has kindly agreed to post the prompts during my time away--thank you, Rhapsy! :)

Any questions, please comment here, PM me, or email me at DawnFelagund@gmail.com.

In just a few hours, I will be posting the first challenge for B2MeM 2013! We welcome and encourage our participants to post their creations (or links to their creations) on this community. As a bit of history, B2MeM was and continues to be an annual "holiday" for the entire Tolkien fandom. It is run each year by a handful of groups, but all are welcome, whether they are a part of those groups or not. However, because those groups have their own specialties, then there is a narrow but not insignificant range of stories written for B2MeM that would not be able to find a home on any of the sponsoring communities. For that reason, we created this community. All Tolkien-based work created for B2MeM is welcome here, but we ask that you please use the posting format below out of courtesy to your groupmates, so that readers know what a story will likely hold in store before clicking to read and can select content they're likely to enjoy.

  • make the title of the post the title of your piece and your penname, e.g., "Frodo's Big Quest" by FrodoFan and

  • use the header below and use an LJ-cut. Simply copy the HTML below, paste it at the top of your story, and fill in the information for each item. If you are linking to a story on another site, use the header as well.

B2MeM Challenge: identify the challenge the piece was created for, e.g., the archetypes theme for Day 1 of B2MeM 2013

Format: short story, drabble, photomanip, poem, sketch, et cetera
Genre: general, adventure, romance, horror, mystery, humor, et cetera
Rating: use either the G-NC17 or General, Teens, or Adult system
Warnings: include reasonable warnings for content readers might wish to avoid, e.g., violence, blood and gore, graphic sex, profane language, et cetera
Characters: a list of important characters featured in your piece
Pairings: a list of any important pairings in your piece
Summary: a brief synopsis of what the piece is about

[livejournal.com profile] indy1776, our intrepid tagging mod, has written a post about how to tag your posts here. If you're comfortable adding your own tags, please do, as tagging is a huge effort for our volunteers.

Any questions throughout the challenge, feel free to comment here, PM me, or email me at DawnFelagund@gmail.com.

Hi! I’m Indy, and I’m the tagging moderator. Please don’t hesitate to ask me if you have any questions about how or what to tag, if there’s something you need me to delete, or anything related to this subject. (Our wonderful volunteers are [livejournal.com profile] lignota, [livejournal.com profile] brookeoflorien, and [livejournal.com profile] foxrafer.)

I'm the tagging moderator, and I'm looking for a couple of people to help me. (Last year, there were two of us and we barely managed to keep up; right now, it's just me.) ETA: That was fast! Volunteers found, and thank you very much.

Volunteer duties involve checking every entry for the proper spelling and formatting of tags, as well as adding any that may be applicable. This is a task-- based off last year-- that will take several hours a week, even though your duties involve keeping track of just one or two types of tags. I will be handling format and genre; I need one or two people for character, and another for prompts.

Note that volunteers won’t be able to delete bad tags from the official list, just remove them from entries; deleting is something I have to do.

(On a general note: tagging guidelines for the community will be posted in a couple of days.)

B2MeM 2013 is fast-approaching, and we need volunteers to help us make banners and icons for this year's participants! If you have some skill with a digital paintbrush (or a real one!) and would like to help us make banners and icons, check out the guidelines below. Please comment here if you have any questions.

General Participation Banners & Icons
We need a range of sizes and designs of banners for participants to announce their intent to participate in this year's B2MeM. Email any banners you make to me at DawnFelagund AT gmail DOT com, and I will post them to the community for others to use. You will be credited for your work, of course. Please follow the guidelines below.

  1. Banners must have "Back to Middle-earth Month 2013," "B2MeM 2013," or "B2MeM '13" somewhere on them.

  2. You may also include the title of this year's event, Back-to-Middle-earth Month Scavenger Hunt: Expedition in the Abecedarium (or a shortened version), but you don't have to.

  3. Any size banner is acceptable. Icons should be 100px by 100px or smaller.

  4. Important!!! You must have permission to use any artwork or photography that you use on the banner/icon. This means that any artwork or photography used must satisfy at least one of the conditions below:
    • The artwork/photography is your own work, or you own the rights to the work.

    • The artwork/photography is in the public domain.

    • You have written permission from the artist/photographer to use her or his work, including making modifications, such as cropping or adding text.

    • The artwork/photography is clearly labeled with permission to use the work for nonprofit uses, including making modifications, such as cropping or adding text.

    • Screen captures from the movies are acceptable.

  5. Any artwork or photography used must be suitable for all audiences, i.e., it should not include nudity, blood/gore, or anything more than mild sexuality (hugging, kissing, etc.).

  6. Files should be saved in .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF file formats. Please use the Save for Web feature (or its equivalent for your software), if available, to keep file sizes manageable.

Prompt Icons
If we can get enough volunteers interested, we hope to make icons for each of the prompts. Please comment here with your email address (comments are screened), and I will get in touch with you about this task. Signing up for more information does not obligate you to actually make any icons, so if you'd like to know more, please sign up!

Reading Week Banners & Icons
We will eventually be asking for volunteers to help us make banners and icons for use by Reading Week participants. More information is forthcoming!

Comments are screened. I will unscreen anything that doesn't contain personal information.

[Admin note: Our poll for this year's B2MeM theme ended up with a perfect tie between the scavenger hunt and alphabet options. We've kinda sorta combined the two, using the scavenger hunt format with the alphabet for inspiration. Thanks again to everyone who shared feedback with us!]

Middle-earth is full of hunters. The Vala Oromë found the first people of Middle-earth while hunting, and hunters have remained central to the stories since. Whether hunting for an Arkenstone or a band of Orcs or for truth and justice, Tolkien’s world is full of hunts for things both physical and metaphorical. Back-to-Middle-earth Month Scavenger Hunt: Expedition in the Abecedarium seeks to encourage creativity in the Tolkien fandom through a “quote scavenger hunt” that participants will use as inspiration for stories, art, meta, and other creative responses.

Yes, that time of year is almost here again: time for our annual Back to Middle-earth Month event! Once again, the Silmarillion Writers' Guild, Many Paths to Tread, and Arda Inspired will be teaming up to bring the Tolkien fandom a month of fun, creativity, and community.

We are currently in the planning phases for this year's challenge, and we need help and feedback from our community to help us decide the challenge we want to run this year. If you have an idea for an event, please do share it in a comment here! (If you want to see what kinds of events we've run in the past, we have links to them all on the SWG site here: http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/specialprojects.php.)

Even if you don't have a specific idea for an event, if there's a past event that you loved (or a past event that you'd rather not see something similar to this year), please comment and let us know.

We have only one requirement for B2MeM events: They should be open to the entire Tolkien fan-writing and -art communities. Ideally, this should also allow people to participate whether they have one or thirty-one days free to work on challenges.

We look forward to hearing everyone's ideas and getting this year's event ready to roll!
