Author's Note: Sam is posed in one of my yet to be planted garden beds. I do hope he's sprinkled a little of Galadriel's gift there!

Sam in My Garden









A few years ago, I made a Sam sock doll as a gift for the_arc5. I had always intended to make another (as well as the other three hobbits.) for myself. So I started with Sam again, as I'd made him once before. He is made from a ladies cotton sock, has brown button eyes, embroidered eyebrows and mouth, and has synthetic curly doll hair on head and feet. (My original Sam doll had embroidered hair, which was entirely too time-consuming!) He stands about 8" from the soles of his furry feet to the top of his curly head.

The pattern for the hobbit sock doll can be found at How to make a HOBBIT Sock Doll by Lobelia at TORN, though I tweaked it a little, especially in the methods of sculpting the face, and in some major adjustments to the clothing. Sam also has a jacket and a Lorien cloak, but he wouldn't be wearing those in the garden!

Sam's little trowel was made from this pattern.

The captions on the pictures come from "The Garden Song" by David Mallett and made famous by Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul and Mary and Arlo Guthrie among other well-known folksingers.

I think hobbits should have nice thick foot fur! I kind of lucked out one day at Hobby Lobby, as they had that particular brand/type of doll hair on clearance!

I *so* lucked out finding the curly doll hair on clearance one day at Hobby Lobby! It saved me a lot of work. Gluing the doll hair on is still time-consuming, but not as much as embroidering all the hair!

Oh oh oh! So adorably hobbity is your little Sam from the crown of his curly little head to the bottoms of his hairy little feet! I haven't heard the Garden Song in years, but it's always been one of my favorites and works SO perfectly with these pictures of Sam getting ready, with this trowel, to do some planting.

I hope you will share pictures when Frodo, Merry and Pippin join Sam too!

I do remember, and often think of them as I work on my dolls! Hers were much more realistic looking, though.

Poor polymer!Frodo. The cat murdered him a couple of years ago. I still have polymer!Pip though!
