Aldarion's Sails and Rigging

Representing the Royal Chandler for the Star Isle, all that is needed to outfit your craft for a long voyage. (This is the stall for all things related to Númenor.)

Comments are now closed but you can continue using the prompts; no claiming is necessary.

How to Post your Prompts:

Leave a comment with the subject line identifying the main characters, gen/het/slash/femslash/poly (if it’s not obvious), a brief description of the prompt, and possible warnings if needed (MPTTor SWG’s). The comment itself should be the prompt.

If for some reason you cannot make a subject line appear, please write and bold the relevant information as the first line of your prompt.

The subject lines and/or bold text will allow participants to easily scan for prompts they're interested in.

For example:

Subject line-- Frodo and Aragorn, gen, hurt/comfort at the Field of Cormallen
Comment-- While Frodo is unconscious after being rescued from Mount Doom, Aragorn cares for him.

OR

Comment-- Fëanor/Nerdanel, wedding night, sexual content

On their wedding night, Fëanor and Nerdanel end up not sleeping at all, as they are too busy enjoying each other.

It is visually arresting. Beautiful balance and simplicity, easy to read (key to constructing a good banner). Just lovely.

The Drúedain on Númenor, gen

The Unfinished Tales mention that some of the Drúedain accompanied the other Edain to Númenor, and that tidbit has always intrigued me, since they were a rather withdrawn people even during their life in Brethil and their friendship with the Haladin.

I'd love to read something about their reasons for departing, what their lifestyle would have been like (did they continue their indigenous traditions or chose to adapt, and if so to what degree, or - since some were mentioned to serve in Aldarion's household - were there different positions?), their relationships to the other inhabitants. It is also said that their foresight made them uneasy beginning with Aldarion's explorations, and that the last of them departed with the arrival of Sauron. That's a pretty wide field to write in, and I'd be equally intrigued by any angle.

Amandil, gen, sailing into the West

"And he took with him three servants, dear to his heart, and never again were they heard of by word or sign in this world, nor is there tale or guess of their fate." (Silmarillion, "Akallabêth")

What did happen to Amandil and his three servants?

I’ve been working on a fic with this premise for over a year now, maybe I will be inspired to finally finish it! Here, have a farthing :)

The women of the Faithful surely experienced the terrible events surrounding the fall of Númenor as much as the men did, but canon says little about them. I would like to see scenes from the last years of Númenor, the Downfall, or the arrival in Middle-earth from the point of view of a woman of Amandil’s family: Amandil’s wife, Elendil’s wife, Isildur’s wife, Anarion’s wife, or an unmentioned sister or daughter. Could be gen, het, or femslash, but I would appreciate no infidelity.

So we missed that! Still here waiting to be told for Back to Middle-earth month. It is very complicated story told in a way that feels very familiar and modern. At some point (or points in their relationship!) they seem to love one another very much, but it not enough--their marriage is not a happy one. There are so many angles from which to approach the tale. There is a lot of falling in and out of love (and never quite at the same time) and then when they do marry, the happiness they share is short-lived.

The long absences of Aladarion provide lots of room for speculation of how young Erendis lived in the years before they married, etc., etc.

If you want a cheat sheet for chronology and incidents from the story of their marriage, check out my bios--Tar-Aldarion (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/reference/characterofthemonth/tar-aldarion.php) and Erendis, the Mariner's Wife (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/reference/characterofthemonth/erendis.php)

I'm buying this one (hope that does not discourage anyone else). I have a lot of words and chapters already posted on a novella about them. I should force myself to at very least finish another chapter this month.

Tar-Vanimelde, character study

Date: 2015-03-08 01:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyelleth.livejournal.com
Tar-Vanimelde was the third ruling Queen of Númenor, but was more inclined toward the arts of music and dancing than toward matters of state - but who was she as a person? Did she leave the de-facto rule to her husband because was aware of her shortcomings as a politician and decided to focus on her talents, or did she rely on her royalty to be able to live the life she wanted rather than assume responsibility? Something else entirely?

I really want to take this one, but the idea I have right now involves 10000+ words and Very Big Future Deciding Exams in May prevent that right now.

Is it OK if I buy it to write later (or never, because I'm notoriously slow to finish WiPs) and just write a ficlet right now to stop the bunnies nibbling?

Yes, of course! Exams (or general RL concerns) always take precedence, so feel free to tackle this when you have the time, and I wouldn't dream of complaining about a ficlet! :)

What if the Antikythera mechanism was a relic from Númenor? I'd think that the Numenoreans were more than capable of creating such devices; perhaps with the help of the Blue Wizards? The Antikythera mechanisms might have been used on all of the ships and if this one (the one found at Antikythera) was on board one of the ships that sank, it would explain how it came to be discovered. Or it could have been on the Last Ship Out, who knows?

Note: this prompt grew out of a discussion on a friend's lj. :)

The Great Wave, gen/whatever

Date: 2015-03-27 06:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] starbrow.livejournal.com
I would be really interested to see the perspective of totally random people when the Great Wave hits Numenor. Obviously not everyone was actively engaged in sailing either toward Valinor or away. There must have been farmers, shopkeepers, people just going about their day, when the tsunami of all time hits.
