Eärendur’s Souvenirs from the Downs

Antiquities from the Golden Age of the Northern Realms  This is the stall for prompts set in Arnor, both unified and fractured (Arthedain, Cardolan, Rhudaur).

Comments are now closed but you can continue using the prompts; no claiming is necessary.

How to Post your Prompts:

Leave a comment with the subject line identifying the main characters, gen/het/slash/femslash/poly (if it’s not obvious), a brief description of the prompt, and possible warnings if needed (MPTTor SWG’s). The comment itself should be the prompt.

If for some reason you cannot make a subject line appear, please write and bold the relevant information as the first line of your prompt.

The subject lines and/or bold text will allow participants to easily scan for prompts they're interested in.

For example:

Subject line-- Frodo and Aragorn, gen, hurt/comfort at the Field of Cormallen
Comment-- While Frodo is unconscious after being rescued from Mount Doom, Aragorn cares for him.

OR

Comment-- Fëanor/Nerdanel, wedding night, sexual content

On their wedding night, Fëanor and Nerdanel end up not sleeping at all, as they are too busy enjoying each other.

*

Remember, no fanworks are to be posted in the prompts posts.

After Tom Bombadil rescues the Hobbits from the Barrow-wights, he carries treasures from the barrow of the Last Prince of Cardolan, and picks a blue brooch to take home to Goldberry. His comments indicate that they knew the woman who bore it, and I'd love to know more about her, about the Cardolan culture of her time, how she met Goldberry and what their relationship was. Either gen or femslash would be great, and I'd prefer it if Tom Bombadil didn't come into the story too much.

Oooh, shiny. I'm just going to grab this and...*searches in pockets and forks over farthing*

Shiny indeed! This was a prompt I'd doubted anybody would be interested in, but sometimes it's wonderful to be proven wrong! :) I hope it's fun to write!

Long have I eyed this prompt from afar, but I didn't have a good idea for it until today when your post in b2memsupport prodded me to take a look at it again.

*buys* :D

Gandalf, Tom Bombadil, Farmer Maggot, and Dirhael all get together at Tom's to smoke longbottom leaf and talk about the disparate lives of a wizard, Hobbit, Ranger and...whatever Tom is.

Gilraen, gen/het/femslash

The appendices state that after a time, Gilraen left Rivendell and returned to her people to the North, but I rarely see fic of this transition period in her life--would love to read about how she adjusts to living among the Dunedain again. Also, I've always been on the fence about whether or not Gilraen ever loved again after Arathorn's death (the Appendices claimed that she lived alone but there's no timeframe on that--she could easily have found someone only to be met with tragedy again)--but if that's something you'd like to include, of either the het or femslash variety, I'd definitely be down.

Oi.... *ponders* my novel Starwanderer is exactly about that (already plus 50k). May I spent my farthing on further editing the novel and continue writing the chapters that still need to be done?

OMG, that sounds like a novel I'd like to read! Is any of it already published?

There is an old chapter 1 up at one archive, I started to write this novel in 2006 for a challenge at Open Scrolls. In 2012 I decided to take the then novella offline and start re-writing it for 2012 Nanowrimo (I won that year). Right now I have 95 pages written, +50k and I think that my usual beta already went through the first three chapters. The novel will be about Gilraen's life the moment Arathorn falls in love with her until her deathbed.

I just re-read some bits, I really missed working on this! Shall I share a snippet from it? Oh why the heck not. Erestor and Gilraen are talking about library things when... well, just see.

“No, I seem to recall that he was taught the rich history of the Haladin.” She replied and rearranged the shawl around her shoulders as a small breeze gave her the shivers. “My beloved son wreaked havoc in the Adunaic section a week ago. I sometimes believe that he thinks himself as a squirrel when he’s that cooped up inside, climbing up and down, bringing sweet cakes from the kitchen with him. And then betimes perching dangerously on the shelves when he gets another idea, to climb higher or thinking that he can easily jump to another shelf. I want him to use the ladder, but he grew tired of that long ago.”

“He would have been Tinren’s nightmare,” Erestor chuckled.

“It would go too far to call my own son that,” Gilraen smiled, “Durdir offered a great suggestion though.”

“And that is?” Erestor enquired.

“Some of the books cannot be repaired and he presented the idea to combine the annals of men in volumes instead of having them in their own separate books. I had some ideas to combine the first….”

“EEEESSSSSSSSSSSteeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllll Dunadan! You rascal!” An angry shout shot through the air followed by a mad dash of a small figure that ran through the bushes close to the garden. Then in a flash a tall figure ran past them, half clothed and his long golden hair streamed behind him as a banner in the wind.

“I have to admit, your son has guts. I cannot recall that one of Isildur’s heir ever tried to pull a prank on Glorfindel. They simply did not dare given his intimidating reputation amongst the young,” Erestor chuckled. “To challenge the Balrog slayer…”

Gilraen said nothing and watched how the tall elf ran past the bushes and disappeared into the thicket as well where her son just disappeared into. Her heart jumped when she heard her son squeal and told herself to remain seated. Whatever her son had done, this matter had to be settled between the offended and her child.

Nice! I like Gilraen's hands-off parenting approach at the end, and I'm looking forward to more of this whenever you finish it!

Hmm - I have been considering whether my train of thought fits best with this prompt or your other one further down.

This one, I think...

Here is a farthing dear - try not to spend it on sweeties that will only rot your teeth :)

Malbeth the Seer, Ivorwen, hope and prophecy

Date: 2015-02-26 07:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zopyrus.livejournal.com
Both Malbeth the Seer and Ivorwen mother of Gilraen are powerful women of the Dúnedain, both of whom must use their gift of prophecy to advise their people.

I would love to see fic that features the two of them interacting somehow—either through dreams, or just Ivorwen learning about her predecessor, or telling Malbeth’s story to someone else. (Somebody had to teach young Aragorn that long prophetic poem, after all!)

Dunedain OFCs, daily life, gen/het/femslash

From: [identity profile] suzll.livejournal.com
We know comparatively little about the lives of the Dunedain in the Third Age, and more often than not the focus is on the struggle of the Rangers in the Wild. But what about the women that are left behind to defend their homes? What about those women who choose the life of a Ranger? What sort of friendships and bonds form among them? Pretty much any fic about the lives of Dunedain ladies would make me happy.

gen/het/femslash/etc all welcome.

Aragorn, gen, AU

Aragorn has returned to the North after all his long journeys. Yet dark forces are moving and soon he is being hunted. For Sauron has discovered the heir of Isildur lives.

I prefer a hopeful ending, but I understand with this prompt if that doesn't happen. :-)

The Birth of Aragorn - gen, het

What were the circumstances surrounding Aragorn's birth and its aftermath?
Where was he born? Who was there? How did his parents and his people react?

Gilrean & Dúnedain Language

When Gilraen arrives in Rivendell with Aragorn/Estel, she says (in Sindarin): "I give hope to Men; I keep none for myself."

To be able to make such a play on words indicates (to me anyway) a fluency that is far beyond basic knowledge of the "hello, how are you" sort. In fact, it could be argued that such fluency can only be learned at a very young age. And while we know that the male heirs of Isildur are educated at Imladris at some point (though probably after age 12), nothing is said of their sisters (for there surely were siblings in some cases, if not all) or other women of the Dúnedain who must have learned some Elvish as well. So when/how did Gilraen acquire her own knowledge?

The quote is in the "put aside the Ranger" scene in RoTK:
http:// youtu.be/ ySQ8WJNGp0U

PS. In my own head canon, the above exchange is how Aragorn acquires the name Estel in childhood.

Elessar returns to Arnor

From: [identity profile] suzll.livejournal.com
"And remember...that my realm lies also in the North, and I shall come there one day." -Aragorn, ROTK, 960.

I would love to see fic where Aragorn returns to Arnor as King and reunites with the Northern Dunedain / starts to figure out how exactly governance of these two realms is going to...work. Basically any scenario would make me happy, but would especially love to see an inclusion of his extended family.

Aragorn, Aragorn's family

Date: 2015-03-18 04:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zopyrus.livejournal.com
Aragorn is raised without knowledge of his true name, and presumably without any contact from his extended relatives. What is it like for him to be reunited with his family when he leaves Rivendell to live among the Dúnedain for the first time?

Appearances from Ivorwen, Dírhael, Halbarad, and/or any OCs you might like to create would all be welcome.
