Denethor's Armoury

Fine Swords, Knives, Shield, Axes and Other Weapons for Sell or Trade. We accept commissions. (This is the stall for prompts set in Gondor and Minas Tirith.)

Comments are now closed but you can continue using the prompts; no claiming is necessary.

How to Post your Prompts:

Leave a comment with the subject line identifying the main characters, gen/het/slash/femslash/poly (if it’s not obvious), a brief description of the prompt, and possible warnings if needed (MPTTor SWG’s). The comment itself should be the prompt.

If for some reason you cannot make a subject line appear, please write and bold the relevant information as the first line of your prompt.

The subject lines and/or bold text will allow participants to easily scan for prompts they're interested in.

For example:

Subject line-- Frodo and Aragorn, gen, hurt/comfort at the Field of Cormallen
Comment-- While Frodo is unconscious after being rescued from Mount Doom, Aragorn cares for him.

OR

Comment-- Fëanor/Nerdanel, wedding night, sexual content

On their wedding night, Fëanor and Nerdanel end up not sleeping at all, as they are too busy enjoying each other.

Love the banner! I am so jealous of how you were able to get that sword through the letter A. (My Photoshop skills will forever remain on the kindergarten level!) It is a very pretty banner.

Boromir, Faramir, (Denathor optional)

From: [identity profile] grey-wonderer.livejournal.com
Ok, the subject line wouldn't allow me to put more in it so:

Boromir, Faramir, (Denathor optional) Boromir preparing to leave for Rivendell for the council, perhaps a discussion between the two brothers? Or two POV's: written from how Boromir sees things then written again with Faramir's POV on events. (and if you want, go a third time through with Denethor's thoughts) Or just write it once in the way that seems best to you. : )

Faramir, Aragorn, Eowyn, wedding gift

Date: 2015-02-26 10:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] grey-wonderer.livejournal.com
Faramir wants to get his bride-to-be a special gift but is uncertain what he should give her. He wants it to be special, something she will treasure, but he is having difficulty deciding what to give her. He can consult Aragorn or Aragorn can see that Faramir is struggling with a problem and offer to help him. Aragorn's suggestions can be good or bad. The gift can be anything and Eowyn's reaction to it can be anything you want it to be.

Faramir, gen, family/hurt/comfort, possibly AU

Date: 2015-02-27 12:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] me-llamo-berry.livejournal.com
Young Faramir (5-15) is tired of being second best to his brother. He's tired of being belittled and punished for small things. He's tired of his father not understanding him. He's especially tired of his brother always having to protect him. He runs away. Does he make it out of Gondor? Does he ever come back? What happens to him in the end? If he comes back, why does he? Was it in vain; will anything change? It's all up to you.

Also, alternatively, how does Boromir feel about this? Does he miss his brother? Will he search, and/or obey his father? Will he help Faramir overcome it?

MINE. *snatches it from my Casey-kitteh gwathel, tosses farthing* This would fit just about perfectly in the "Isildurchil Dithen" AU of my Arnor-verse which I co-write with my friend Susana. Also, welcome to the Faire! I enjoyed reading your other prompts, even if I don't think I can write them. *hugs Casey* So glad you could join us!! :) I'm sure others will snatch up the others pretty quickly!

Boromir survived the attack at Amon Hen, but Denethor perished anyway. Aragorn appoints Boromir as his Steward.

Don't mind whether it is a good working relationship or not.

Gen/het/slash - but if slash the sex should not be the focus of the story,

I'd love to see something about the Fellowship in Minas Tirith after the Quest. Merry and Pippin have duties; Merry probably has to spend time guarding Théoden's bier, and Pippin also has guard duty. But what about Frodo and Sam? What keeps Legolas and Gimli and Gandalf busy? Do they spend time attending on the new King? Do they ever have any time to themselves?

The New Shadow

Date: 2015-03-04 04:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mirach-ravaia.livejournal.com
Write a story or create an artwork inspired by The New Shadow (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/The_New_Shadow)
- an incomplete sequel (approximately 13 pages) to The Lord of the Rings that J.R.R. Tolkien quickly abandoned. It is set in the time of Eldarion, Elessar's son, approximately 105 years after the Fall of the Dark Tower. In it is mentioned the Dark Tree, and two characters: Saelon and Borlas.

Borlas was the son of Beregond, the captain who saved Faramir from being burned by Denethor. He lived in Pen-arduin, which may have been in Emyn Arnen. Sometime in the past he caught a young man, Saelon, stealing an apple from his garden. He scolded him describing his behavior as orc work but took the boy under his wing becoming his master. Years later, he learned through him of the growing shadow among Men and the possibility of a secret cult worshiping the old enemies of the world.

This was a story I attempted years and years ago before I knew what I was doing with writing. My ideas have since turned out to be garbage, but the plot bunny is still there, gnawing at me! I shall have to buy this one, though I doubt I will be posting the response anytime soon!

For elenbarathi
I'd still like to see Eldarion meet Ghan-buri-Ghan-buri-Ghan, the young Chief's Son of the Wild Men, and have an adventure with him, off in the Wild somewhere with no grown-ups around to protect them or mediate between them. I think they ought to have a knock-down-drag-out fight, the way little boys do, and be BFFs afterward. And I want to see Eldarion lose the fight, because I think I will like him a lot better if he gets some of the princely privilege knocked out of him by a kid who is also the Heir Apparent of a sovereign Kingdom as ancient as his own.

*wry grin* Okay, let's be honest: I wanna see Eldarion alone in the trackless forest, totally lost, cold, wet, hungry, benighted, scared out of his wits, and then rescued by a dirty grunting savage his own age, who is completely at home in the Wild, and every bit as haughty and arrogant as himself, plus more skilled at fisticuffs. I want to see the look on Eldarion's face when the grown-ups finally find the two, and he learns that the 'dirty grunting savage' is his Peer in rank, the son of a King to whom his own father owes his very crown (since without Ghan-buri-Ghan's aid and guidance, Minas Tirith would certainly have fallen.)

By decree of King Elessar, no one is permitted to enter the Wild Men's forest, so something would have to happen to get Eldarion off the road and away from his entourage. Maybe just curiosity? The forest is so enticing in late Spring and early Autumn; a boy who woke up before anyone else might be tempted to explore a little, and get turned around. Then something else would have to happen to prevent his being tracked by his Ranger father - maybe the King's party starts tracking him, but then is taken for trespassing by a party of the Wild Men, none of whom speak Common, so no explanation is possible until they're brought before Ghan-buri-Ghan himself.

Aragorn and Arwen's children--and a monkey!

Date: 2015-03-05 05:57 am (UTC)

Aragorn returns from a diplomatic visit to Harad, and brings back a monkey for Eldarion. What do Eldarion's sisters think of the situation, and how do they display their dislike for the gift or their envy for it? How does the monkey's presence interfere with the running of the Citadel and the family dynamics of the royal family?

Posting from an IPad so unable to list a subject line. Sorry.

Aragorn, Faramir, (other characters optional) gen

Aragorn wants to honor the White City's war heroes with a memorial of some type, statue, plaque, garden, grove of trees, you decide. He knows that Boromir's name should be among those listed on the memorial but what about Denethor? Should they include him and if so, how? Hoping to do the correct thing, Aragorn consults with Faramir to get his thoughts. Denethor was the Steward of Gondor but will his inclusion in the memorial please or anger the citizens of Gondor and what are Faramir's feelings?

Gen, Frodo & Fellowship, culinary escapades

Date: 2015-03-05 04:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] febobe.livejournal.com
In the little house where the Fellowship live in Minas Tirith post-Quest (see book-verse for this reference), coming and going as they please, Sam handles most of the cooking - but one day, Frodo decides to surprise his companion by rising early and making breakfast for everyone. But things don't go exactly as planned. It's your choice how that works - perhaps Frodo isn't bad at cooking - he might just keep getting interrupted and burn the toast and bacon, or perhaps he keeps getting unwanted "assistants" and you know how they say too many cooks spoil the broth, etc. Or maybe he really IS just dreadful at cooking. :) Bonus: write Sam's solution to it when he rises and finds a frightening situation in the kitchen! Do they visit an inn for breakfast, or another restaurant type eatery? Do they show up at the main citadel for breakfast? What happens? :)

Enjoy!

Gen, Frodo & Sam, seafood

Date: 2015-03-05 04:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] febobe.livejournal.com
Frodo & Sam are taken by someone (Faramir? Legolas? Who it is is up to you!) to visit the harbors where the seafood they enjoy is brought in every day. Show their exciting day out at the boats and the dock area. What experiences do they have? Is Sam willing to go near a boat again? How about Frodo? Do they have any flashbacks to Sam's near-drowning or any other past traumas? Do they go out on a boat? What do they think of how the food is brought in? Do they finish their day at the best fresh seafood restaurant down there? What do they eat? (Shrimp, lobster, broiled or grilled fish, fried fish, etc.) What do they think of their meal? etc.

Bon appetit and fishy writing,
Febobe :)

Great prompt, and as I now have nearly a page of notes, I should claim it! (although no idea if I'll actually get it written by the end of the month)

(just wondering a bit how you define Gen in the context of this - my vague thoughts include Faramir's relationship with Eowyn being one of the issues causing disagreements but it not being the main focus of the story....)

I do ship Eowyn/Faramir, Faramir can be as involved as you like, or entirely absent - I just think Glorfindel and Eowyn would make epic friends!

Éowyn and Ioreth, studying healing

Date: 2015-03-08 11:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyelleth.livejournal.com
After the Ring War, Éowyn announces her desire to become a healer - and of course she'll need a teacher. How about Ioreth, who even shares part of her heritage with Éowyn? Like Éowyn's grandmother Morwen she comes from Lossarnach - and thrown into close quarters at the Houses of Healing, they might get along well, or not, or grow into an unlikely friendship. Bonus for Éowyn interacting with other healing apprentices, beginning to work through the aftereffects of the war, and finding a home in Gondor that isn't entirely dependent on her love to Faramir.

“And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, reckoning nothing on wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.”—The Siege of Gondor.

This has always been one of my favourite passages in the book, and it’s probably that it was a whole lot of symbolism (I’m tired, so not going to start being all literature-y now, but yes).

But the cock also must have had mundane origins, since it was a real, physical being. My question is, where did the cock come from? And why was it still in the city, since all the other cocks have apparently disappeared?

[The repetition of the word ‘cock’ is now making me giggle]

What If: Finduilas Lived

Date: 2015-03-14 03:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] samtyr.livejournal.com
What if: Finduilas lived and Denethor died instead? (It doesn't matter how, just some weird thing happening that no one expects. A cold that turns into pneumonia, or something -- it's up to the writer to decide.)

There must have been some line of succession for the House of the Stewards, especially with two young (though underage) heirs. Would she have become Stewardess of Gondor? Or was there some kind of council from the nobles' to govern until Boromir came of age?

And if Boromir is Steward at the time of the Fellowship, does Faramir take his place? How does that change things for the quest?

From: [identity profile] rakshathedemon.livejournal.com
I'd like to see a story where Faramir and Aragorn disagree about something political as Gondor transitions from the authority of the Stewards to that of the new King. An argument ensues, one that is not solved within a few hours; both sides having valid reasons rather than a lust for power.

I'd prefer Gen (male/female sexual content fine), but if someone feels they can't write the story without slash, they can go for it; though i see the relationship between Aragorn and Faramir as one of strong friendship and mutual political support.
From: [identity profile] starbrow.livejournal.com
Ooh. I really want to write this but I'm just not sure how.

I'm picking it up anyway, and will give it some thought.

Theatre in Gondor

Date: 2015-03-14 09:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rakshathedemon.livejournal.com
Gondor having arguably one of the most sophisticated cultures in Western Middle-earth, as well as one of the oldest, wouldn't they have had a thriving tradition of theater, as well as other arts? What kinds of plays would they have performed? If Gondorian playwrights used material from the Silmarillion or other quasi-mythic sources, or even history, what would these plays be like? What would be popular, and/or classic plays, revised Numenorean satires?

I would love to see a story where a classic Gondorian play based on the heroic exploits and marriage of Beren and Luthien is presented to the new King and Queen of Gondor post-Ring War, with, among the audience, various Elves who had actually known the legendary couple. But you can use the prompt at any time in the history of Gondor, and plays with any kind of source material, and any characters, canon and/or original.

This ridonkulously cute photo of a kid cosplaying a young Eldarion is making the rounds over at Tumblr:

http://marta-fandom.tumblr.com/post/114847236279/eldarion

and I thought it would make for some interesting fic. What did Eldarion, his proud parents, or anyone else think of this finery? Is it new, or is it inherited from somewhere? What did Arwen think about seeing her child wearing the Evenstar, which neither waxed nor waned? What of the craftsmen who made it? I'd love to see what people make of different aspects of this post, and would welcome either an Eldarion-centric piece or something about other Gondorians' reactions.
