Elrond's Secondhand Books

Books, new and used, in Westron, Sindarin, Quenya and Adûnaic. Fine stationary supplies; scribal services offered. (This stall is for prompts set in Rivendell.)

Comments are now closed but you can continue using the prompts; no claiming is necessary.

How to Post your Prompts:

Leave a comment with the subject line identifying the main characters, gen/het/slash/femslash/poly (if it’s not obvious), a brief description of the prompt, and possible warnings if needed (MPTTor SWG’s). The comment itself should be the prompt.

If for some reason you cannot make a subject line appear, please write and bold the relevant information as the first line of your prompt.

The subject lines and/or bold text will allow participants to easily scan for prompts they're interested in.

For example:

Subject line-- Frodo and Aragorn, gen, hurt/comfort at the Field of Cormallen
Comment-- While Frodo is unconscious after being rescued from Mount Doom, Aragorn cares for him.

OR

Comment-- Fëanor/Nerdanel, wedding night, sexual content

On their wedding night, Fëanor and Nerdanel end up not sleeping at all, as they are too busy enjoying each other.

Maglor & Elrond, gen, healing

While wandering by the Sea in the 3rd Age sometime, Maglor manages to get hurt or attacked in some way. Elrond, who had always kept track of Maglor, finds and/or rescues him, takes him back to Rivendell and nurses him back to health.

Points for the twins and/or Arwen being in the story.

Gilraen/Glorfindel romance

After Arathorn's death, Gilraen comes to live in Rivendell and meets Glorfindel. I would like to see these two together in a story, not too angsty preferably, that would explore their potential relationship. Rating/sexual content up to the writer. Good luck!

Elrond & Frodo, gen, found family

Elrond and Frodo have a chat about their unique family circumstances and their love for the ones who sheltered and kept them safe as children.

(Remember Bilbo was treated as somewhat of an outcast from the Shire on his return, nothing anything like Maglor & Maedhros of course, but still enough for Frodo to feel it.)

ysilme: Close up of the bow of a historic transport boat with part of the sail. (NaNo 2017)
From: [personal profile] ysilme
Elrond and Thranduil have been close friends in the First Age in Beleriand, but lost sight of each other over time. Now, sometime during the Third Age but before the events of The Hobbit, they meet again in Rivendell and rekindle their friendship.

Gen or slash, but no smut, please. Hurt/comfort would be nice, but isn't a must. Be as free with the characters and pairings or as canon-compliant as you like.

Any character, any rating, book incident

hhimring: Tolkien's monogram (Tolkien)
From: [personal profile] hhimring
Someone opens the pages of a book and something falls out.
The book is either a volume from the Rivendell library or the personal copy of an inhabitant of Rivendell. It could contain Bilbo's translations from the Elvish or an ancient elvish lay or be a ledger of household accounts--there are many possibilities.
What is it that falls out of the book: a fragment of a letter, a pressed flower, a ripped page or an elaborate bookmark, maybe? Does it evoke memories or trigger a discovery? Perhaps it even has some kind of special powers?
Who is it who opens the book--Elrond himself, someone who lives in Rivendell or a visitor?
This could be set at any time since the founding of Rivendell and feature in very different types of stories.

Elves of Rivendell, singing, drinking

Date: 2015-02-27 02:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zopyrus.livejournal.com
O! What are you doing,
And where are you going?
Your ponies need shoeing!
The River is flowing!
O! Tra-la-la-lally
Here down in the valley!

Who exactly are the Elves who greet Thorin & Co as they travel into Rivendell? And what do they get up to when they are not catcalling random Dwarves? OCs are great, as would be cameos from known Rivendell elves. And given the timeline, extra bonus for including Gilraen in your story!

For a little extra inspiration, I have always loved this picture (http://postimg.org/image/tu8b5x52n/) of the scene (the Elves are in the bottom right corner, under the bridge).

From: [personal profile] ysilme
Any kind of fanwork - story, art, craft - show us or tell us about a book/scroll/manuscript from Elrond’s library. Title, description, summary, cover, binding, endpapers, the art of book-binding, illumination or anything related, or a story about one particular book, be it its creation, history, content, or just playing a major role in any kind of story. It doesn’t have to be a complete work/book either. Anything goes here, provided it centers around anything that has to do with the Library of Rivendell.

So here is your prompt: a story about dancing set in Rivendell! Any characters, any type of story. If you would like further inspiration, please check out our comments under the link.

Rivendell after Celebrían

Date: 2015-02-28 08:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] suzll.livejournal.com
Celebrían's capture and torture by orcs, and subsequent departure to Valinor, was a heartbreaking loss that deeply affected her family. At the same time, her departure must have affected not only those close to her, but the entirety of Rivendell. How does the departure of the Lady of Imladris affect its citizens? Does it cause some to decide there is no joy left in Middle-earth for them as well? What of those who stay behind? How does Rivendell as a whole emerge from what was certainly a period of mourning?

Appearances of canon characters and OCs alike are welcome.

zdenka: Yellow leaves. (all will yet be well)
From: [personal profile] zdenka
Something about Isildur's wife learning of the death of her husband and three older sons, and receiving the shards of Narsil. Some possibilities: Elrond breaking the news to her; Isildur's wife questioning Ohtar (and Estelmo?) about what happened; a scene between her and her youngest son Valandil; making decisions about her future and how to protect her remaining son; the sharing of counsel and comfort between the women of the Dúnedain; or anything else that occurs to you. It would be cool to use background from "The Disaster of the Gladden Fields" in Unfinished Tales, but that's not required.

...he just fell on his face.

This prompt comes from a skype discussion, and since I have a farthing hoard, I'm taking the initiative to post it.

Write about a time when Glorfindel was foiled by his own hair. Possibilities can include tripping over it, getting it tangled in something, losing items in his hair, etc. etc. Extra points for tasteful balrog jokes. (I'm not really sure if there are tasteful balrog jokes, but I guess that's why you'd get extra points. Which don't mean a thing because they aren't farthings.)

Feel free to have Lindir write a derpy ballad about the whole thing.

From: [identity profile] zhie.livejournal.com
Adventures in the third age of the wee ones of Imladris. The obvious choices would be Elladan, Elrohir, or Arwen, but there could be elflings visiting with their parents, or even those we know little about in their younger days (Lindir, Erestor - heck, you could go movieverse with li'l Melpomaen). What was life like for children living in Imladris? What mischief did they get up to? (Bonus points if someone adopts a plot bunny where Glorfindel gets reborn in Imladris instead of Valinor.)

Gen, Frodo & Elrond, hurt/comfort

Date: 2015-03-05 04:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] febobe.livejournal.com
While in Rivendell in the late autumn before his journey to Mordor, Frodo develops some sort of illness (what type is up to the writer, and whether major or minor is also your choice). Elrond cares for him with such kindness that Frodo can see how Bilbo described him as being "as kind as summer."

Enjoy!

I've posted a similar plot bunny in The Shire market stall, and now I'm posting another one here. I can never have too many Sam H/C stories! [g] And there are certain other fanfiction writers who agree. Sam is badly hurt or seriously ill while in Rivendell, and Elrond takes care of him with the help of the other hobbits.

Rivendell itself, gen/whatever, its founding

Date: 2015-03-13 06:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] starbrow.livejournal.com
How did Elrond find the location for Rivendell? Was he deliberately searching for a place to build a home, or did it just happen?

Is this tied in at all with Gil-galad passing Vilya on to him?

Basically, anything and everything about the founding of Rivendell would be lovely!
From: [identity profile] zhie.livejournal.com
For a time, Elrond was running Rivendell without his lady. Was it pretty much another day at the office, or did he have some great parties in the Hall of Fire in his younger days? What about his staff? Did Glorfindel, Erestor, and Lindir aid in any early day escapades happening in Rivendell?

What happens in the valley stays in the valley - but it would be oh so fun to read someone's rendition of it.

Bonus points for Gil-Galad showing up to check up on his herald.

I love "getting acquainted" fic set in Rivendell, in which the hobbits get to know their future companions on the journey, especially Boromir, Legolas or Gimli. Or perhaps they become acquainted with other inhabitants of the Last Homely House, such as Arwen, Glorfindel, Erestor or Lindir or even OC Elves. How did the cooks, for example, feel about these voracious little people? Did Sam make friends with any of the gardeners? What role does Bilbo play in introducing his younger kin to his current home?

Fic or art would be great!

How did it come about that Bilbo ended up in retirement in Rivendell? Did Elrond invite him? Did he invite himself? Did Gandalf arrange it? When were the arrangements made--before he left the Shire, or before or after his last journey to Erebor? What were his living quarters like? What did he bring with him from the Shire? Did he adjust easily to living among Elves? And how did the Elves feel about this small, elderly mortal dwelling among them?
From: [identity profile] lindahoyland.livejournal.com
I have an idea for this, but fear it is only loosely based on your prompt, but hope you won't mind. It is for another chapter of "Return to Rivendell" and will involve Aragorn remembering Bilbo's retirement.

Here is my farthing and please tell me if you're not happy about my idea. I hope someone else will fulfill the prompt better.

Aragorn, Aragorn's (other) family

Date: 2015-03-18 04:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zopyrus.livejournal.com
Aragorn is raised with no knowledge of his true name, and grows up calling Elrond his father; he is also clearly close with Elladan and Elrohir. But once he comes of age and falls in love with Arwen, Elrond seems to default to Stern Future Father-in-Law.

How do Aragorn and Elrond deal with the change in their relationship, and how does it affect their other family members, especially those dwelling in Rivendell (Gilraen, Elladan and Elrohir)?

I think fic set any time before Elrond leaves Middle-earth could work for this, but I would particularly like to see the immediate aftermath of Aragorn's departure: either Rivendell in his absence, or his first visit back to Rivendell after moving away.

So very much having this, if only to undermine it dreadfully and imply that whoever wrote the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen had no idea of Elrond's actual character and personality and so it all...came out wrong.

You can take this prompt anywhere you like - gen, het, slash, sexual content, epics, whatevers.

In some of the way back early versions of the Council of Elrond chapter, not only does Erestor get picked for Team Fellowship, he's also a half-elf, kin to Elrond.

o rly?

Tackle this prompt to explain either a) his half-elven-ness or b) write the alternate version with him in the fellowship (bonus points if you add in the other early fellowship elf, Glorfindel).
