Mungo Mugwort's Mathoms

Used and useful items of every description for sale or trade! We will make you a great deal! (This stall is for general prompts (no location or specific characters attached), photos, links to YouTube videos, etc.)

Comments are now closed but you can continue using the prompts; no claiming is necessary.

How to Post your Prompts:

Leave a comment with the subject line identifying the main characters, gen/het/slash/femslash/poly (if it’s not obvious), a brief description of the prompt, and possible warnings if needed (MPTTor SWG’s). The comment itself should be the prompt.

If for some reason you cannot make a subject line appear, please write and bold the relevant information as the first line of your prompt.

The subject lines and/or bold text will allow participants to easily scan for prompts they're interested in.

For example:

Subject line-- Frodo and Aragorn, gen, hurt/comfort at the Field of Cormallen
Comment-- While Frodo is unconscious after being rescued from Mount Doom, Aragorn cares for him.

OR

Comment-- Fëanor/Nerdanel, wedding night, sexual content

On their wedding night, Fëanor and Nerdanel end up not sleeping at all, as they are too busy enjoying each other.

*

Remember, no fanworks are to be posted in the prompts posts.

Choose three characters from Tolkien's legendarium. Place them in a room together. What happens?

Whether the breaking of the World, the making of the Straight Road or the ships sailing from the Grey Havens, the Sundering Sea is a powerful image throughout the Legendarium.

This song always makes me think of that:

Perhaps it will inspire others.

Reposted from B2MeM 2011’s Passport to Middle-earth, March 8: Dorthonion

From the lone shieling of the misty island,
Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas -
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides!
Fair these broad meads, these hoary woods are grand;
But we are exiles from our fathers' land.

- from the “Canadian Boat Song”, attributed to John Galt

Tolkien and the scientific naming of things

Date: 2015-02-27 05:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com
Create a fanwork (fictional or non-fictional, literal or figurative) in some way inspired by the content of this journal article*:

"Sauron, Mount Doom, and Elvish Moths: The Influence of Tolkien on Modern Science." (http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/tks/summary/v004/4.1larsen.html)**

*The link provides an excerpt that is easily long enough to understand the gist of the article and provide creative fodder, although the full article may also be available to people with access to certain academic databases.
**The article title is a bit of a misnomer; the topic is more Tolkien's creative legacy in scientific nomenclature.

it looks like it could be a Thrani kitten...my Thranduil, especially young Thranduil, loves cats. Mine too. :)

I'm having this prompt, and it's probably going to involve something about Fingon.

Beleriand is totally Scotland to the Shire's England, anyway.

Damnit, and here I thought I was doing so well in exercising self-control in buying things, but trust you to conjure up a bunny that'll smash through my barriers like they're paper! :D

How does the sea effect the various peoples of M-e? We know the Elves hear the cry of the gulls, but how might other races react to the sea too? Do they feel longing, revulsion, or simply like being beside it?

And also purchased, thanks to the glorious revelation (a.k.a the embarrassing gaffe of bad reading comprehension) that there can be multiple buyers. This might give me some draft material for to tweak for part of an eventual Mythmoot submission.

I think I have the full article on iLugburz. I know I read it in its entirety at one point.

Song prompt: "The Riddle" (any)

zdenka: Miriam with a tambourine, text "I will sing." (Music)
From: [personal profile] zdenka
Write/draw/create another type of fanwork inspired by this song: "The Riddle" from the musical of The Scarlet Pimpernel. (Lyrics in the video.)

http://youtu.be/WAXm2FcEUBw

"Reel on, love! Toughen your scars / Year by year we're falling like stars"

"And we slowly learn someone has to burn / Better you than me!"

This song reminds me of the Doom of the Noldor ("by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason"), but feel free to create a fanwork about any characters or time period of Arda. (You don't have to use the quoted lines; it's just to give people browsing prompts some idea of what the song is about.)
