Mungo Mugwort's Mathoms

Used and useful items of every description for sale or trade! We will make you a great deal! (This stall is for general prompts (no location or specific characters attached), photos, links to YouTube videos, etc.)

Comments are now closed but you can continue using the prompts; no claiming is necessary.

How to Post your Prompts:

Leave a comment with the subject line identifying the main characters, gen/het/slash/femslash/poly (if it’s not obvious), a brief description of the prompt, and possible warnings if needed (MPTTor SWG’s). The comment itself should be the prompt.

If for some reason you cannot make a subject line appear, please write and bold the relevant information as the first line of your prompt.

The subject lines and/or bold text will allow participants to easily scan for prompts they're interested in.

For example:

Subject line-- Frodo and Aragorn, gen, hurt/comfort at the Field of Cormallen
Comment-- While Frodo is unconscious after being rescued from Mount Doom, Aragorn cares for him.

OR

Comment-- Fëanor/Nerdanel, wedding night, sexual content

On their wedding night, Fëanor and Nerdanel end up not sleeping at all, as they are too busy enjoying each other.

Remember, no fanworks are to be posted in the prompts posts.

Whether the breaking of the World, the making of the Straight Road or the ships sailing from the Grey Havens, the Sundering Sea is a powerful image throughout the Legendarium.

This song always makes me think of that:

Perhaps it will inspire others.

I hadn't intended to use this prompt, because what I wrote doesn't comply with your request for gen/het - but your picture snuck into the scenery of the story I just finished, and I think it's just fair to give credit where credit is due - and the rules of the market do state that prompts are jumping-off points rather than hard-and-fast rules, so... *hands over a Farthing*

From the lone shieling of the misty island,
Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas -
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides!
Fair these broad meads, these hoary woods are grand;
But we are exiles from our fathers' land.

Create a fanwork (fictional or non-fictional, literal or figurative) in some way inspired by the content of this journal article*:

"Sauron, Mount Doom, and Elvish Moths: The Influence of Tolkien on Modern Science." (http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/tks/summary/v004/4.1larsen.html)**

*The link provides an excerpt that is easily long enough to understand the gist of the article and provide creative fodder, although the full article may also be available to people with access to certain academic databases.
**The article title is a bit of a misnomer; the topic is more Tolkien's creative legacy in scientific nomenclature.

From: [personal profile] zdenka
Write/draw/create another type of fanwork inspired by this song: "The Riddle" from the musical of The Scarlet Pimpernel. (Lyrics in the video.)

http://youtu.be/WAXm2FcEUBw

"Reel on, love! Toughen your scars / Year by year we're falling like stars"

"And we slowly learn someone has to burn / Better you than me!"

This song reminds me of the Doom of the Noldor ("by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason"), but feel free to create a fanwork about any characters or time period of Arda. (You don't have to use the quoted lines; it's just to give people browsing prompts some idea of what the song is about.)

One of the themes in Tolkien's works is the fading of beauty. Write/draw/create another type of fanwork inspired by this song: "Verdi prati" from Handel's opera Alcina.

http://youtu.be/pQm4P4JNruQ

Lyrics and my (slightly loose) translation:

Verdi prati, selve amene,
perderete la beltà.
Vaghi fior, correnti rivi,
la vaghezza, la bellezza
presto in voi si cangerà.
E cangiato il vago oggetto
all'orror del primo aspetto
tutto in voi ritornerà.

Green meadows, pleasant woods,
you will lose your beauty.
Lovely flowers, flowing streams,
your grace and loveliness
will soon change.
And once the beautiful scene is changed,
everything in you will return
to the wildness of your original appearance.

From: [personal profile] zdenka
I'm putting this in general prompts because it could be based on any of Tolkien's Middle-earth writings and set in any place or time period (anywhere in Middle-earth that Dwarves have been, or even in Valinor, if you wanted to write about, say, the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, or Gimli meeting Aulë, or something dealing with the Dwarvish afterlife). Inspired by the Icelandic hymn "Heyr, himna smiður" (Hear, smith of the heavens), create something about the Dwarves' religious beliefs or practices or their relationship with Aulë/Mahal. Including some Dwarvish women would be very welcome.

Family traditions, from the silly to the serious. Are the children read to at bedtime every night or do they exchange silly gifts on birthdays/Yule/etc. or do they light candles for deceased family on a certain day of the year? Maybe silly games like “pinch punch first of the month” or do they have a game night once a week? Or are there traditions for spotting the first spring flower, firefly, or something of that nature?

Something, anything about family traditions.

I'm not going to try to tempt your Imagination with one song, dear faire goer.

I'm going to try to tempt you with thirty years of songs.

You have before you a prompt which allows you to use any song from Erasure's catalog. I don't know how many options you have, probably less than Sixty-five Thousand, but it's a lot (http://www.erasureinfo.com/history/). The Hardest Part will not be choosing this prompt, it will be the Drama! of deciding which one to use. No Doubt, you will Make It Wonderful no matter what you decide on. If you have a hankering for British synth pop, then Make Me Smile, Reach Out, and take this one Home with you.

Stop! Don't Say No! It Doesn't Have To Be about the lyrics; Sometimes, just the title will provide enough inspiration to Be The One.
