B2MeM Challenge: This is for the shameless self-insert prompt by [livejournal.com profile] binkaslibrary--Come on, everyone does it at some point ;) So I dare you: write about meeting your all time favorite Tolkien character. What would you do if you met him/her? Would you faint? Would you bow in reverence? Or maybe you would throw an inane number of questions about Middle Earth at them... ;) Anything goes! Rating/content/genre up to the writer. Good luck, fellow fans!
Format: Ficlet
Genre: Humor, Fluff
Rating: G
Warnings: n/a
Characters: Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin and Me
Pairings: n/a
Creators' Notes (optional): See, originally this was not a self-insert, this was a “someone-else-inserted-me insert” from the incomparable [livejournal.com profile] grey_wonderer that began as a comment fic back in the summer of 2005. It kind of grew in the telling, and became a story known as “The Pepsi Saga”. If you have her friended, you can access “The Pepsi Saga” through my memories (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=dreamflower02&keyword=hobbity%20adventure%20from%20GW&filter=all) and the last chapter was really a self-insert, as she allowed me to write it, and it's in my POV. It's called “Night Out at Barnhill's”, and is in my LJ.
And, by the way, this is also a slightly late birthday gift for Shirebound!
Summary: I have another visit from the Fab Four (no, not the Beatles), and they bear gifts and greetings to another mutual friend of ours.

A Brief Visit from Friends

"So you've moved since we visited you last," said Frodo, as we sat around sipping iced tea and eating fudge cake in the living room.

"Yes, yes we moved here about nine years ago."

"I like your new house. It's very cozy," Pippin said, as he sat petting Miss Belladonna in his lap. He had taken to the cat as soon as he learned she was a Took. Frodo, who looked like a little child in the DH's big recliner was scratching Sophie behind the ears. Our normally territorial little dog took right to the hobbits.

Merry was standing by my desk, gazing up at the wall. "That's not really Sting, you know."

"Yes. It's a replica though. A gift."

"Ah!" I'd discovered early on that calling something a gift seemed to explain everything so far as hobbits are concerned.

Pippin spoke up again. "You know, the last time we visited we never did get to find out how the story about the boy wizard turned out."

"Well, he attended the Wizard's school, and made good friends there. He had some dangerous adventures because a Dark Lord was after him, but he eventually defeated him by destroying some objects that the Dark Lord had put his power into."

Four pairs of eyes stared at me incredulously. "You are joking, surely," said Frodo.

I shrugged, a little embarrassed. "No, I'm not. You must realize that your own tale has influenced many other storytellers."

Sam had been rather quiet since we had come in from looking at my garden. "Excuse Miss Dreamflower, but it's almost noon. We'll be too late to take Miss Shirebound's gifts to her."

"Is that what's been worrying you, Sam? We don't really follow that custom here. Besides, it is two hours earlier where she lives."

"Oh, well, that's all right then," said Merry. "We have time to eat a little more of this delicious cake before we go."

I'd never seen fit to question the rather cavalier way the hobbits traveled around the country when they were here. Distance did not seem much of a factor. Sometimes I wondered if someone had loaned them a TARDIS.

"Speaking of gifts, I have something for each of you. I went into my craft room and came out with the things I'd selected for them. I gave Pippin the little figurine I'd made of him years ago; I gave Sam a packet of yard-long bean seeds; to Merry I gave a page of doodles that included the device of Rohan and some Celtic knotwork; and to Frodo, I gave a poem of Bilbo's that I had calligraphed and illuminated some years back. (What can I say? I wasn't expecting them to visit today!) I also wrapped up the last of the cake in aluminum foil and gave them that.

I walked them out to the porch, and gave all of the lads hugs. "Now you be safe," I said, "and give Shirebound my hugs and tell her I said 'Happy Birthday'!"

"We will," said Frodo as he hugged me back.

I turned to latch the screen door behind me, and when I turned around they were already gone. I listened carefully, but did not hear any loud wheezy noises, so I suppose a TARDIS was out. Perhaps they had a Wayback Machine instead...

I loved this, it is truly delightful. I loved the way you brought Harry Potter into it.

A wayback machine, eh? Of course, someone might have loaned them a Firebolt. But without there being a marked pop of air it couldn't have been apparition. Heh!

Good visit!

He had taken to the cat as soon as he learned she was a Took.

LOL! Oh Dreamflower, I love this so much! This explains the crumpled (empty) bit of aluminum foil I found in the kitchen this morning, and the four curly heads asleep on the sofa under (my) Pippin's favorite fleecy blanket. I must go and make breakfast for everyone!

*many hugs and loves*

"Mirkwood spider" syndrome! I didn't realize it was catchy. But at least it's good company.
