Future Dreams of Knowledge by Erulisse (one L)

Dinner that night was more formal than the previous evening. Elrond sat with other elves around a large trestle table, one of several tables. Everyone chose their food from heated pans arranged along the walls. Each table held ceramic mugs for water or hot tea.

"There are two seats here," Erestor said as he turned to sit at a smaller table, pulling a nearby stool closer to him with his foot. Glorfindel sat and because he was hungry, he tucked into the food appreciatively, ignoring the whispers surrounding him. Soon their plates were clean and Glorfindel was mopping up the last of the gravy with a heel of bread.

"Do we have to stay here now?"

"No, no meetings are scheduled tonight." Erestor said. He hesitated and a blush spread across his cheeks. "I thought you might be interested in seeing where I usually spend my time."

"My friend. I would be very interested in seeing where you work." The two elves got up from their meal and headed for the northern passageway. "I thought you were in charge of assignments."

"I am. I allocate housing, employment, assignments, and schedules," Erestor responded. "But whenever I have time, I work in the library. We have books, scrolls, parchments and other treasures, some dating back to the First Age. The humid environment of the valley is very damaging."

"I thought Imladris was a military camp and a sanctuary for refugees. How did tomes of such age come here? Aren't we are merely waiting for the Dark Lord to make his next move before going to war?" he asked, astonished.

"It is the hope of Elrond, that Imladris might become a haven of safety and a bastion of learning, spreading knowledge where only ignorance existed before. Come - it's just down this hallway."

I love that Elrond already has plans for a future. It makes me feel very protective of the poor books though - Erestor besster take good care of them!

Oh, I was more feeling sorry for the books in a general way - it makes sense to me they might be there, I just can feel my inner book lover fuss at "humid environment" and "damaging" ;)
