Summary: The Gamgees and the Cottons were distant cousins and good friends; sometimes childhood friendships can become more.

The Gardener's Daughter and the Farmer's Son

He always saw me as just his friend's little sister,
and o' course, his own little sister's best friend.
He used to chase me, pull my braids,
and I'd tease him somewhat awful.
But one summer it changed.
His eyes met mine,
I'd grown up.
Him, too.
Good!

Aren't they an adorable pair? And just imagine all the cute little double-cousin faunts that they will have when the families get together?

I actually have imagined some of the double cousins, if only in the vaguest of terms - in "Circle of Life" (which I wrote for Larner's birthday last April), I mentioned the Cotton children along with the Gamgees, travelling to Farmer Cotton's farm on the Birthday, 1440 SR. The only one I gave a name to was Rowan, Tom and Mari's middle daughter, who sang the "Rolly and Robin" song that gave her newest cousin his name.

I may have to explore the young Cottons some more, if the Muse allows...

Yes, do! *grin* You are building what my friend Dana used to call quite a "barrel o' hobbits"!

(There used to be this popular game called "a barrel o' monkeys". You'd spill the little plastic monkeys out of the container and they'd hook together in various configurations. Dana called her OC hobbits her "barrel o' hobbits". *grin*)
