Treasure by Erulisse (one L)
Glorfindel walked slowly through the room while Erestor lighted several lamps. Shelving for writings stood against two walls with L's extending into the chamber. Alcoves for other items were set into thick walls centered between large openings overlooking the sheltered courtyard. Torches from the opposite colonnade were flickering in the distance.
He stopped, raising his hand and gently stroking a finely carved and enameled flower with trembling fingers. "I remember when this was first made and how beautiful it looked in Idril's hair," he whispered. "How did it survive?"
"Idril was wearing it when she fled Gondolin. Later, she passed the hairpiece to her son who gave it to his wife, Elwing. Their son, Elros, happened to grab it when the sons of Fëanor attacked Sirion, destroying the city and capturing both brothers, Elros and his twin, Elrond." Erestor came up to him, offering a goblet of wine. "The leather disintegrated, of course, but the metalwork survived."
Glorfindel turned towards him, a desperate hunger on his face. "Could you … would you teach me the history since my death? I have huge gaps …my personal … argh!" He shook his head violently. "Things that I should know, I suddenly do not. Like this afternoon. Until I held it, I remembered nothing of that style of bow.
"I know little about the history of Middle Earth from the time of my death until now. I was instructed to seek Ereinion, but told nothing more save that evil was again arising." Glorfindel raised his glass and took a deep draught. "I know the distant past, but if I am to work with these elves, I must know their family ties, alliances and histories."
Erestor nodded. "I will teach you and answer your questions if you will share your history with me."
"Agreed."

Finally had a chance to look things up (computer issues are NOT fun). Story is called "Poppies for Idril" and it's on Fairie and on Many Paths to Tread.

Date: 2016-03-23 08:34 am (UTC)The story is also on SWG. That is where I read it, I think.
Sorry to hear about your computer troubles! I hope they resolve themselves quickly!

(For extremely selfish reasons I am so happy that you are writing this set; it gives me the chance to use my Glorfindel icon!)

Date: 2016-03-22 02:30 pm (UTC)My Glorfindel in this set is not all-powerful and all-knowing. He's unsure of himself and where he will fit into this new world. He has the skills of a highly-trained warrior, but knows few people still living in Middle Earth who may know him from before he retreated to Gondolin. If he meets Galadriel in this, it might be an interesting meeting since they would have known each other from the West. I have no idea where the story will want to go but doubt they will meet in this series.

Date: 2016-03-22 07:32 pm (UTC)Yes, there is a huge amount of time that Glorfindel missed in the history of Middle Earth. This is a strange journey into completely new territory with very few familiar things or other elves.

Date: 2016-03-25 10:43 pm (UTC)(Fun Fact: I also have a distinct memory of reading about that hairpiece before, but I have no recollection of reading the story you mention? Or anything about Helyanwe, for that matter. Odd.)

Date: 2016-03-26 02:20 pm (UTC)So many times Glorfindel is brought back to Middle Earth, trained and fully ready to step back into his role as a warrior/protector. That's one way of looking at it, but I'm not seeing that with my Glorfindel in this series. Here he is woefully unprepared, psychologically fragile, and even though he is a First Age warrior of consummate skill, he still has to find his feet and his comfort zone. He'll get there eventually.

Date: 2016-04-05 10:15 pm (UTC)I like your approach a lot - it seems likely that returning to Middle-earth after such a long time would be very disorienting for Glorfindel.
