Perhaps I had sent him on a hopeless quest. I can only do all in my power to protect Minas Tirith and I will not bow down to criticism. Mithrandir thinks he’s so wise but he knows not about how Gondor’s policies are upheld. Pelennor must be fought; Faramir should be the one to do it.
Then word came to me that the attempt to take back the Pelennor had failed; Faramir had fallen.
Oh Faramir! Had I, in my haste, sacrificed my only son left?
Angry tears fell and I knelt down in utter sorrow; the end was near.
…
The darkness was overbearing. As we moved East, the air seemed to still and I felt even more forgotten than ever.
“Who are these men,” I asked the sullen Dernhelm who had not once spoken to me. We were facing strange men of different language and dress and I was ill at ease.
Dernhelm just shook his head.
It looked like King Theoden was trying to negotiate a way in. It seemed that we could not face our enemies head on and we were looking for a short cut.
I braced myself for the oncoming storm. Pippin, I am coming.

• In the "Tale of the Years" Tolkien tells us about what happens to certain characters each day of March 3019. We challenge you to write about the character(s) he does NOT mention: “Samwise finds Frodo in the Tower. Minas Tirith is besieged. The Rohirrim led by the Wild Men come to the Grey Wood."
It did not seem hopeful at all. Between Denethor’s growing madness and Minas Tirith becoming more and more inhospitable, I did not know where to go and how to serve. There was no instruction; there was no structure. What was a knight of Gondor to do at this time of utter destruction?
Denethor looked more unbearable than wrath upon learning his son was mortally wounded from his attempt. He was bringing him somewhere, but all I knew that Faramir was ill, not dead …yet. Denethor would not heed my words but it was apparent Faramir needed medicine.
Never did I feel so helpless, not even when I was in the clutches of the Uruk-hai had a felt so very heavy-hearted. And I was all alone. What would Merry have done?
“My lord, we must help Faramir!”
“Save your words for another time; it is too late! The Dark Lord has found it!”
I shook my head in defiance. Frodo had failed? I could not believe that! Surely, it wasn’t so.
But my attention went back to the attendants preparing the Steward and son to their burial.
I must do something quick before Gondor loses another one of their very best.

Beautifully imagined. Thank you for these glimpses of our brave, wonderful hobbits during this very dark time.
*hugs you up and down*

Date: 2016-03-27 02:23 am (UTC)I was aiming for something different and did think of these characters not being spoken about. I was thinking about extending Merry and Pippin in different ways to encompass more of the timeline and what they were doing.
Denethor's grief is not handled that much in the books so glad we got to hear about that here.
