Summary: Early in the Quest, the Fellowship enjoy an unexpected treat - a foraged meal from the delights of the forest.



"A feast," said Frodo as the Fellowship enjoyed Sam's stew. "However did you manage to bring down such a fine deer, Legolas?"

Legolas smiled. "Stealth is everything with deer," he said. "And elves are gifted in such manner."

Boromir grinned. "Come to Minas Tirith and we shall show you stealth. But what of the little ones? They too are to thank for this fine meal."

Sam blushed to the ears.

"All hobbits know how to find food," said Merry. "We learn it quite young, even those who never learn their letters."

"You managed to gather mushrooms and herbs skillfully," said Aragorn. "That is something even many learned folk cannot manage. Especially so far from home."

"I hope they were all safe to eat," Gimli said gruffly.

"They were," Aragorn replied. "I know these parts. I *did* check."

"Told you so," Pippin chimed in. "We know edible mushrooms anywhere! And there's no one better with herbs than Sam."

"And no finer cook," said Gandalf.

Sam went scarlet.

"No," said Frodo with a smile, "none better."

Ah! This is wonderful! "Foraging hobbits" is one of my very favorite tropes!

And I agree with Dreamflower--I, too, suspect that the Hobbits did more than their fair share of adding to relatively decent meals along the way. Although how often they'd find decent mushrooms in January is a good question! Heh!

I loved this! And I even got in a chuckle over Boromir's attempt to one-up Legolas. Surprised he didn't try to co-opt the mushrooms. LOL
