A Sky Filled With Hope

Frodo and Sam sat on the bench outside Bag End, smoking their pipes. A contented sigh was shared between them as they settled down at the end of the day. The comforting sounds of Rosie cleaning up the kitchen, singing softly to the babe in the nearby cradle, made them both smile with the beauty of the ordinary. Every day Frodo saw Elanor Gamgee and her small hand gripped his finger with amazing strength, he marveled at this perfect miniature hobbit his friends had been blessed with.

“It’s almost time for my birthday, Sam,” Frodo said as he blew a smoke ring sailing and expanding to the blazing skies of the west. “I’d like to spend it with you, Rosie and Elanor, and just a few close friends, no big to-do this year.”

“I’ll see to it, Mister Frodo. We’ll have a nice birthday with family, hmmm? I think Masters Pippin and Meriadoc were planning on coming to wish you well, but we’ll just have a nice day of it here at Bag End, shall we? Instead of a big to-do at the Party Tree?”

“That would be perfect, Sam. I just wish Bilbo could come, but I know he’s much too old to travel such distances for a whim. There’s only one journey left for dear Bilbo.”

They settled back, pulled on their pipes and focused on the sky. It seemed anxious to put on a good show on this September evening. After starting out with a rich gold, it moved into a copper-bronze, then a true orange tinged by pink, finally shifted into a glorious brilliant pink that faded to lavender as it passed over the hobbits.

“Just look at that sky, Mister Frodo. We haven’t seen many like that!”

Lowering their pipes, they watched, mesmerized, as the sky began to darken, stroke by stroke. Aquamarine, sapphire and finally indigo, all were represented as the sky finally achieved the deepest of blues and the stars finally came out of hiding.

“I wonder if them elves over sea see the same skies we do?” Sam speculated. “It would be a shame if’n they couldn’t enjoy such a sight as this in their part o’ the world.”

“I think, since the fall of the Two Trees, they share the same skies. I think sights like what we just saw must put hope and joy into their hearts as much as it does for us.” Frodo got to his feet and moved to the end of the bench to knock out his pipe before going indoors.

“Just look there, Sam,” he said, pointing to the East just over the gentle hills. “There’s Eärendil rising to offer hope to all who live in Middle Earth, the Silmaril still shining clear and lighting his way across the sky.”

“It’s a sight to see, certain-sure,” Sam responded from slightly behind him. The two hobbits stood for a minute, watching Vingilot rising higher into the sky before them. “Well, and as fine the sights are we’ve had this night, I’m thinking my Rosie and Elanor are the sights I’m most welcoming.”

“As ever, you have hit it on the head of the nail, Sam. Let’s go in and tell Elanor a bedtime story before we all turn in for the night.”

Thank you so much for this sweet story, nettenya. I love Sam and Frodo being able to share the beauty of Earendil in the safety of the Shire, even if it's only for a little while.

I really like this -- a simple and beautiful scene, with practical hobbit wisdom added in.
