B2MeM Prompt and Path:Minas Ithil and Minas Arnor, Red
Format:Ficlet
Genre:Gapfiller
Rating:PG
Warnings:None
Characters:Elendil, Isildur, Anárian
Pairings:None
Creator’s Notes:Tolkien provided the sandbox, I merely play with the bucket and shovel he left behind. No profit of any kind is made from my fanworks.
Summary:After the sinking of Numenor, the Faithful, led by Elendil, were given lands by their allies, in order that they build fortresses to help in defense against the Evil One.
The Defense of Sun and Moon
Elendil and his sons looked at the wide rushing river and then at the shores. Defensive possibilities ran through their minds. The open plain ahead would allow for warning before enemies could storm the gates and the cliffs would offer a solid backdrop for the northern location. The canyon walls leading to the mountain pass in the south would compress assaulting forces, making it more difficult for an enemy to mass large numbers. The city, Osgiliath, was under construction. Its location, straddling the River Anduin, was essential for trade and import, but it would be well neigh indefensible. They required more.
"He is not defeated yet," Elendil said, looking carefully. "Our land has been taken by the waves and exists no more. We have a new beginning and strong allies who have offered much needed assistance, but evil will follow us. The seas will not have destroyed the Evil One, merely transformed him into yet another image."
Elendil turned toward Mordor, pointing at the Ephel Dúath. 'Beyond that wall of peaks lies the center of His Empire. By building here, we are offering ourselves as the vanguard of defense for all Free Peoples.
"Isildur - to you I offer the south. Build there, Minas Ithil, a fortress to guard access to the pass of Cirith Ungol, the only clear pass over the mountains into Mordor.
"Anárian, to you I delegate the building of Minas Anor, place it against the cliffs to the west, directly across the river from Minas Ithil. The cliffs will ensure that enemies must assault it directly from the front and will guard its back from attack.
"I, of course, will continue the building of Osgiliath which will straddle the river between your fortresses, like a buckle on the belt of the River Anduin. Come with me, let's discuss this in greater detail."
Elendil strode away, heading for his rooms in Osgiliath. His two sons stood a bit longer looking at the open plain, the river and the Ephel Dúath beyond. "So, brother mine," Isildur said, clapping his brother on the back as they turned to follow their father into Osgiliath. "You get the sun, but I shall build the moon to rival her harsh beauty."

Interesting gap filler.
