B2MeM: Rivendell Card 160, prompt G48 - Rivendell/Imladris
Format:Drabble
Genre:Gen
Rating:Gen
Warnings:None
Characters:Bilbo (implied)
Pairings:none
Creator’s Notes (optional):none
Summary:Thoughts on language
It all belongs to JRR Tolkien.
What's In A Name?
Rivendell. You'd think Elrond could choose a more romantic name for such a beautiful place. It's Sindarin name, Imladris, rolls musically off the tongue, but it just means, “deep dale of the cleft”. It's a steep sided valley, and that's what he named it.
Elves are a strange folk. They embellish their buildings with carving, paintings and delicate hangings, but their language is quite simple, when you take the trouble to learn it. I think that sums up elven-kind. They appear so high minded and magical but actually, they are as straight forward as any simple hobbit of the Shire.
