Maedhros put down his pen and considered his situation. Naturally, dispatches from the front were sent to Hithlum on a regular basis. He would see to that they were informative and useful for his king, but it had been a very long time since Maedhros had written to Fingon.

Dear cousin,

I have been thinking of the blood between us, and how to apologize for it.

Hopeless! He was tempted to crumple the paper and feed it to the fire, but he didn’t, of course. Not even a prince could afford to be so careless with such precious things like paper. He crossed it out and continued his work.


Dearest Findekáno,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am overjoyed to hear the news that you are to be wed. Of all our cousins, I believe you are one that would make a worthy husband, tho’ you have left it very late. But this letter is not to chide you for your tardiness, but to congratulate you for deciding to pass on your noble blood …

No, it wouldn’t do at all. Maedhros sighed and turned his letter over, careless of the still-drying ink. This letter would have to keep. Perhaps, with further delay, he would be able to congratulating him on a joyous birth as well…
