B2MeM Prompt, Card and Number: B12, Adjectival ABC, AU Types (well, a bit), Color Burst 4 - Green
Format: ficlet
Genre: family
Rating: PG for mention of deaths
Warnings: a bit of movieverse tossed in at the beginning.
Characters: Dis, Balin, mention of Thorin II, Dain II, Fili, Kili, and Thorin III
Pairings: Dis/OC, Dis/Dain Ironfoot
Creator’s Notes (optional): I believe Dis deserved to be Queen Under the Mountain - and I think the remaining members of Thorin's Company would have recognized her as such in private.
Summary: When Thorin II Oakenshield is slain along with his nephews, his remaining sibling - his sister Dis - comes to Erebor and has a talk with Balin about her future, and the future of the royal family.
"He called him a what?" The green-gowned daughter of Thráin II fumed as she walked the halls of Erebor at Balin's side.
"A pointy-eared princess, Lady Dís," Balin said with a grimace. "I told Dáin, and Thorin before him, it was not wise to antagonize the Elvenking, but did they listen?"
"Of course not," Dís muttered. "Males! Well," she inclined her head to Balin. "Some of you have sense, thank Mahal. But my two - and to think, Dáin offered to marry me now that he has been proclaimed King. He thinks that will ease my grief over my brothers and my sons."
"His son is motherless now," Balin pointed out quietly. "And it would secure his position as rightful King under the Mountain."
Dís sighed. She was fond of Dáin's son - and he had been named for her brother, after all. He was nearly of an age with her own Fili and Kili, now lost to her. "I will accept his suit," she said finally. "But no matter what he thinks himself, I am Queen under the Mountain. Let our folk know it to be so."
"Your Majesty." Balin bowed deeply and without mockery. "I am ever at your service."
"I will remember it," Dís said. "If you ever have need of anything - for standing by my brother, and my sons, I owe you a debt. Ask whatever you wish and if I can grant it, it will be so."
***
Years later, Balin was refused the right to retake Khazad-dum by King Dáin's word. He knelt before his Queen, however, and begged her leave. "Go with my blessing, and may Mahal watch over you, my good and faithful cousin," she said softly. "Make me proud."
"I promise, Majesty," Balin said, and departed on his mission.
