Format: chaptered fic
Genre: family
Rating: PG for mention of deaths
Warnings:
Characters: Aegnor Arafinwion, Legolas Thranduilion
Pairings:
Creator’s Notes (optional): "Coron Firyar", or "Mound of the Mortals" is my name for the Mound of The Two Trees, once Legolas has...repurposed...it.
Summary: Aegnor seeks solace, but finds it interrupted by Legolas Thranduilion, his distant cousin. It seems the two have much to learn from each other, there in the West.

Aegnor Arafinwion sat on an ornate bench, beneath the dappled shade of the Ezellohar, an open book in his lap. His eyes were fixed on a point in the distance, as his mind wandered into distant memory. Around the great Mound of the Trees, its withered husks testament to the Dark Days, four smaller mounds were set. He loved the riot of wildflowers that grew upon them, for Life should balance Death.

Between the old Trees, a blessed mallorn grew, and it was that Tree which had shaded him as his mind wandered. He glanced up briefly as a new shadow fell between his book and the light of Anor. "Thranduilion. Sit with me, if you will."

Legolas took his seat on the bench. "You honor me, cousin," he replied. "I am surprised that you would choose this spot, of all places, to seek repose."

Aegnor smiled. "Is that so? Then perhaps you have been remiss in learning your history, young one; for all my brother Finrod is Friend of Dwarves and Men, I too was beloved of a Mortal." He glanced around the small barrows, at what was now called the Coron Firyar. "You have done well here, young prince. Your small brothers could ask for no better."

Legolas bowed his head, "I can only hope it is so."

"I would not say so if it were not true," Aegnor said in a tone of mild rebuke. "This is a place of death, yes, but also of life. You have brought hope to Aman where little remained. This is your legacy, young one - a legacy of which you may be proud."

Legolas blushed, and thanked Aegnor softly. He turned to each barrow, tears in his eyes. Gimli. Bilbo. Frodo. Samwise. He trembled, and Aegnor drew Legolas into his embrace.

"Mourn, young one," he murmured. "Weep and be comforted. It is well to grieve. I am here."

Legolas wept, but even as he mourned he felt grateful that one of his distant kin understood his pain. This, too, was their legacy; the friendship of Mortals, and he could only hope it continued to blossom as the mallorn did.

What a lovely, bittersweet scene. Legolas would need comfort after seeing to his mortal friends' final rest. *sniff*

Oh, this was lovely. Only one who has loved and understood the boundaries and freedoms of mortality can look at this, the suffering of the immortal, and understand the depths of their sorrow.

This whole concept is beautiful, not to mention a sweet moment between two people I really didn't expect to ever see interact.
