B2MeM Challenge: O-68 – 5 and 5 – Denethor, Art Supplies – Canvas, Artifacts and Weapons – Scepter of Elros Tar-Minyatur
Format: Fictlet
Genre: Humor
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Characters: Denethor
Pairings: None
Summary: It is time to unveil the official court portrait of the current Steward. Did the appointed artist do justice to the Steward's visage?
The Staff of Elros Tar-Minyatur
Denethor stood in front of the cloth-covered canvas, arms crossed. He looked at the artist from the corner of his eye. The thin, nervous man, paint of varying colors underneath his fingernails, had not inspired faith in his competence as he had fluttered around him while arranging his pose 'just so'.
'Oh well, I might as well get this over with.' thought the Steward, and he signaled for the obscuring cloth to be removed. As the cloth fell to the ground Denethor heard the intake of breaths behind him, as well as a quickly cut off twitter of laughter. He stepped closer to the canvas.
Looking carefully at the revealed image, he thought that the artist had actually done a fine job on his hair and face, and his robes were rich and folded well. Then his eyes moved farther down and stopped suddenly.
"What is that?" he asked, pointing out the staff held in his hand, a staff that bore a remarkable resemblance to an erect penis with spread wings below the curved head.
"My Lord Steward," the artist responded nervously, "that is the Scepter of Elros Tar-Minyatur."
"Humph. Well, it might be his staff, but it is no scepter. Paint over it," and he turned and left, hearing the courtiers break out in laughter behind him.
