Kaylee Arafinwiel, the Peredhel Perian, sat down and smiled cheerfully on her new applicant for a roommate. “Suilad! Man eneth lin?” she asked the newcomer.
He lifted a coppery eyebrow. “Essenya Nelyafinwe Curufinwion,” he said pointedly, and Kaylee smiled sweetly, switching effortlessly to Quenya.
“Elen síla lúmenn’ omentielvo, Heru Curufinwion--”
“Nelyafinwe.” The tall Elf seemed perturbed by this small Mortal - who dared call herself both half-Elven and Hobbit, and of his half-uncle’s get, besides - who sat across from him with such a chipper smile.
“Heru Nelyafinwe,” Kaylee went on blithely. Then she switched languages on him. “Do you speak Westron?”
He raised his one hand in a gesture of what-can-you-do. “If I must,” he growled. “That is two questions,” he added. “Choose your remaining three wisely.”
Kaylee shrugged. “Hope you don’t mind if I nibble on a biscuit. Skipped elevenses, don’t you know. And that wasn’t a question. Want one?” She offered him the plate of green iced sugar cookies and a cup of tea.
“That was a question,” Nelyafinwe replied. He picked up the small biscuit, eyed it mistrustfully, sniffed and popped it into his mouth. Then he picked up the teacup, balancing it carefully.
“I suppose that’s fair,” Kaylee agreed. “The tea’s all right, it’s from Rhun,” she added. “Or was it Khand? One of those eastern places, anyway.”
“That was also a question,” Maedhros said, sniffing at the cup before drinking the tea. “One more.”
Kaylee glared at the tall Elf. “Fine,” she grumbled. “Did you ever find Elured and Elurin?” she demanded.
Maedhros’ expression grew closed. “Why couldn’t you have just asked me about Findecano, like everyone else in this wretched Age?”
Without waiting for an answer, he vanished, and Kaylee sat back with a sigh.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered to the empty air. "I guess you're withdrawing your application?" she called out a moment later. The silence was answer enough.
