Creator’s Notes (optional):Returning to two old friends in this story. They are exploring Valinor. I’m allowing them to be west of Tol Eressea and actually on the mainland.
Summary:Breakfast – the most important meal of the day. Breakfast must have two things – coffee (essential!!!) and some sort of food, often egg related. Gimli found what he thought was the perfect egg for a breakfast omelet. Was he right?
A NEW WEAPON
The sun had been up for an hour now, and Gimli was busy making breakfast. The plains they were crossing seemed endless, bordered in the west by high peaks capped with snow, and in the far east, ocean, although they were far inland. The dwarf was humming a soft tune under his breath, something about stone and delving, of course. Legolas smiled and walked toward his friend.
“Is there coffee?”
“Aye, as much as passes for coffee in this overly-tame land,” Gimli replied, passing the elf a mug and waving at the pot on the edge of the coals. “We should have begged Aragorn for some of those coffee plants before we took sail.”
“All plants exist here too, since Yvanna tends her gardens here in the Blessed Lands. I’m sure we can arrange for some true coffee with a few messages back and forth.”
“Hmph,” Gimli sounded, then he stretched to his right, whisked the contents of a bowl briskly, and emptied the bowl into the heated pan. Coaxing the mixture back and forth with a turner, he quickly made a large omelet which he cut in half, sliding one half onto a plate and handing it to his friend.
“Here you go. It’s best eaten while hot.”
Legolas gracefully sat nearby, his plate held in one hand, his mug in the other. Placing his mug near, he quickly cut the food into smaller bites, then pulled out his eating sticks. He put a portion into his mouth, chewed, and his expression quickly changed to one of disgust. Gimli, moving things away from the coals, didn’t notice his friend’s reaction.
“So”, Gimli said as he settled down, his own omelet in front of him. “What do ye’ think of the omelet? I found this clutch of eggs near the riverbank and one of them was large enough for the both of us.”
“Truth?” Legolas looked at his friend, eyebrow raised?
He watched Gimli take a bite, forcing himself to swallow it. “Truth,” Gimli gasped out, his eyes tearing up.
“All right then. I think the crannock eggs should have stayed in the nest where you found them. This is the most horrible thing I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve had some vile foods over my long years.”
Gimli stood, tossing his food into the fire pit and throwing on another branch to pull the coals back into bright flames. Legolas quickly followed suit, sacrificing his omelet to the flames, and they both sat back down, their coffee in hand. Legolas was the first to crack, bursting out in laughter. Gimli quickly followed.
“I think, if we had pelted orcs with these eggs, we might have won the great battles without losing a single warrior,” Gimli said, gasping the words out between guffaws of laughter.
“True, that!” Legolas laughed. “Can you imagine how much damage Pippin could have caused the orcs with these eggs and his sling?” The remainder of their morning was spent fondly remembering old friends long gone and far away.
