MEETINGS
The sun was shining brightly, light glistening on a far-away river. Small white clouds floated gently through the sky as a soft breeze ruffled his hair. Turning around, he noticed he was facing a field of sunflowers in full bloom - sunflowers stretching as far as he could see. From the midst of the flowers, in the far distance, he heard a familiar voice singing a song he had not heard for long years. His heart leapt, filled with hope of seeing a familiar face and a dear friend.
In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe ‘tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.
Walking into the tall, swaying flowers, he turned towards the voice, his speed increasing to a trot and then a run as the voice grew louder. His breath hitched and tears came to his eyes. He began to sing in return, echoing the song's refrain as the voice sounded closer and closer.
Though here at journey’s end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.
As he moved through the flowers, he came to a gap in the rows and stopped. Turning, he saw a figure standing at the opposite end of the row. The two hesitated for a moment then began walking towards each other. ‘This cannot be real. It is a dream,’ he thought. As they drew closer to each other, their steps quickened and they broke into a run. Tears of joy streaked their faces. Their arms came around each other in a fierce hug. Words were whispered, minimal yet everything.
"Mister Frodo, sir. Mister Frodo!"
"Oh Sam!. Dear Sam. My Sam."
