The Lord Faramir lay still and silent on his bed, as if dead already. But spurning the coldness of death, his body burned with a fever that not even an ocean could cool. Ioreth lifted a ceramic cup of spring water to his lips—the coldest water they could get without having ice, and there had been no ice since the roads were blocked.

If only Gondor had a king, with hands that would bring healing. But there was no king; and so Ioreth raised the cup to Faramir's lips: once, twice, a thousand times—and still, the fever burned.
