Summary: Thorin finds an egg shell.

 

It was early morning and Bilbo and Thorin were enjoying a walk round Bilbo’s garden, when Thorin suddenly bent down and picked up an egg shell.

“I know what this is,” Thorin said.  “It’s a robin’s egg.”

Bilbo looked at it and shook his head.  “No, that’s a song thrush egg.  Robins’ eggs are pale cream not blue.”

“Not like our robins’ eggs then?”

“Apparently not.  One more thing where it turns out we’re rather different.”

“And just when I thought I was getting the hang of things.”

“Yes,” Bilbo grinned.  “It’s almost as if there’s an ocean between us.”

What a shame, to live in a world where robin's eggs aren't that beautiful, wonderful turquoise!

Well, I'm a Brit and with Bilbo on that one.

Mind you an English robin looks different from an American one too!

Didn't they use an American robin in filming Mary Poppins (though it was animatronic, not a real bird, anyway, and Julie Andrews did all the whistling 'singing' for it?) I'm not sure I've ever seen a real English robin!

I've just looked at a picture, and yes, that is an American robin.

I enjoy the differences between lands. It was a surprise when I discovered a couple of years ago, that British and American robins are different.

I think the differences are interesting, once you know they exist.

Ooooh. I wonder what other differences Hobbits and Dwarves (or we Americans and Brits) have between their robins.

Donut, of course, being a bird is intensely interested in differences between his distant cousins. :)

British (or European) robins are about half the size of American robins.

There are so many things which we assume are sure to be the same and then are surprised when they aren't.
