Format: Ficlet
Genre: Gen

Pairings:Thranduil, Haldir
Creator’s Notes (optional): I’ve really been enjoying these two elves together. The prompt of “Loyalty kink” threw me for a bit, but it made sense after doing a bit of research. I hope I answered the prompt in a way that won’t betray Haldir’s loyalties to his home or his love.
Summary: Haldir’s time in Mirkwood is coming to an end. After a day spent killing spiders, he confesses his divided loyalties to Thranduil.

A QUESTION OF LOYALTY

Their last day had been spent outdoors, investigating a new spider nest too close to the settlement for Thranduil’s comfort. There were younglings in the Halls who might be in danger if the spiders were too close. After finding and destroying the nest, they headed back. Day was ending as they crested the final hill before reaching the stone doors of the keep.

“Look at that!” Haldir said, turning to look at the western skies. He dismounted and stood by his horse, captured by the scarlet skies. Thranduil joined him and they stood side-by-side in comfortable immobility as the sky continued its journey through the blue shades of cerulean and sodalite, finally darkening into a field of navy blue against which Varda’s stars were strewn.

“I’ve never told you this,” Haldir said softly. He faced outward, not focusing on his lover. “Long ago, after Amroth left with Nimrodel and before the great battle in front of the Black Gates, Lord Celeborn spoke with me. He asked me about my loyalty; whether it would lie with him and his Lady, or whether it resided elsewhere.”

“And what answer did you give, Marchwarden?” Thranduil asked, moving to face him.

“I told him that my loyalty is to the land – always. It is all the answer I could give to him. But to you … I tell you this. I owe allegiance to Lórien, but my heart resides here, in your Halls. The land is all I share with these upstarts from Beleriand.”

“And if it comes to war?”

“I hope it won’t come to that.” Haldir grasped Thranduil’s hand, still gazing out at the stars as he continued. “I will fight to keep my land free from the Dark. But if I must choose a person to fight next to and perhaps die next to, I’ll fight by your side. My life without you would be barren and cold.”

The two warriors stood quietly a few more moments, then mounted to return to the Halls. They had one night together before Haldir left the next day, and Thranduil didn’t want to waste a single moment.
