OCs are ours. https://archiveofourown.org/works/16915254/chapters/39741054 She has given me permission to post this story (my gift to her) and to link hers. In brief, Oropher and his brother Vehiron are the sons of Celeborn's first cousin Celepharn, who died in the Fall of Doriath. Felith is Oropher's future wife and Thranduil's mother, but at this point she is a commoner, a weaver, and her grandfather's ward; he doesn't approve of Lord Oropher trying to court her.
Summary: After dealing with Oropher and Vehiron's misbehaviour and grief, and hearing Oropher's anger at Master Alfirindir out, Celeborn goes for a walk on the beach to collect his thoughts. But he's not as alone as he thinks, and the Lord of the Sindar doesn't have to be strong for everyone...

Celeborn walked along the shore of Balar, throwing stones and watching them slide over the broken ice, as he mulled over the encounter Oropher had disclosed to him. Oropher had pleaded with him not to intercede with Master Alfirindir; very well. He would not tell Alfirindir that as head of the House of Elmo he, Lord Celeborn, had every right to demand Felith be given the right to hear her suitor out.

Celeborn would not, however tempting it was, even seek out Felith and tell the young weaver that his cousin wished to court her. But he still had to laugh darkly at Alfirindir’s pronouncement. She will never know you were here. Even if he said nothing, Felith had her ways. She was Maerwen the Seer’s daughter - surely something would reach her ears...

“Celeborn?”

Celeborn turned at the sudden call, and smiled in relief to see Galadriel standing there. “Galadriel, melethril,” he murmured, wrapping her in his embrace. He gave her a chaste kiss that promised more when they were truly alone, and stepped back. “Is all well with you?”

Galadriel’s eyebrows arched. “I could ask you the same, melethron nin. You were practically shouting your thoughts for all to hear.”

“By all, you mean you,” Celeborn observed.

“Hmm, yes. So what is this about Felith and Oropher that has you so overwrought, husband?” Galadriel inquired.

Celeborn grimaced. “Oropher went to see Master Alfirindir, wishing to see Felith today. Alfirindir turned him away and barred him from ever seeing Felith again. He had the nerve to say his granddaughter would not even know Oropher had come.”

Galadriel smiled thinly. “Did he. Well, he is wrong.”

“I promised Oropher I would not interfere,” Celeborn said warily.

“You promised him you would not,” Galadriel agreed with a serene smile.

“Do you plan to interfere, Galadriel?” Celeborn asked, and sighed as she evinced a virtuous air.

“I, confront Alfirindir? Never. But what is coming will come. Oropher and Felith are meant to be, as Mistress Maerwen Saw, and we well know her power.”

She sent him a vivid image of Felith and Oropher standing together, arrayed in wedding garments, chains of heartsease - pansies, Men called them - garlanding the trees under which they stood.  He saw himself and Galadriel there with Felith and Oropher; a rush of emotion overwhelmed him. Celeborn felt angry and sorrowful that the bridal couple’s parents, and so many others they loved, had not lived to see that day, holding back a sudden urge to weep.

“Grieve, melethron,” Galadriel murmured. “Grieve for what should have been, and what will be a long way off yet. Grieving proves you yet live - mark these stones,” she added, and the one still in Celeborn’s hand fell to the sand. Celeborn stared down at it, and Galadriel smiled sadly. “If it could weep, it could arise and go. But it is merely stone, while you live and breathe. Grieve with me and do not fear.”

Wrapped in the circle of Galadriel’s arms, relieved of the need to be strong for Oropher and Vehiron, Celeborn released his pain and wept.

May the day you are joined at last come soon, he thought when at last he had worn himself out, resting his head wearily on his wife’s shoulder. May you know happiness, my beloved cousin, and Maerwen’s vision prove true.

Lovely, and yes, all beings deserve their happiness, and the expression of their grief. In the joy of these events, the sorrows of what might have been will surely be felt as well.
