This counts, doesn't it? 'Story' is just in comparison to 'essay' here, without implying any particular starting length? (Sorry if that's kind of a dumb thing to ask, question from a nitpicky, non-native speaking linguaphile. :))

It's not an essay, it's a drabble, 175 words. Was supposed to be longer, but it had other plans. :)

Perhaps vignette is the right word here or ficlet? Of course it counts! Story as a form can include drabbles, ficlets, short works, vignette ect ect.
