This is a very touching look into the future of Fangorn Forest and one that is told from Quickbeam’s point of view. The Ents are nicely portrayed as the sentient beings they are, and are shown great dignity as well.
It begins when Quickbeam is called by the other trees to investigate the news that holes are being dug by men once more, notably in a place where a rowan grove lived before its destruction by Saruman. He is distressed by such news but as he approaches the former grove, he soon recognizes the voices and he reassures a nearby oak that these men are their friends.
Quickbeam is pleased to meet several members of the Fellowship – notably Merry, Pippin and Sam, along with Legolas and Gimli, Aragorn and Arwen and their extended families as well. He soon discovers that they are on a long-promised tree-planting expedition, having brought many rowan saplings from their own tree nurseries. The hobbits have brought along a picnic lunch as well, and as the day draws to a close the final tree to be planted is an oak grown from an acorn that is from one of the oldest oaks at Frodo’s home at Bag End, and is meant to honor Treebeard and Frodo.
At sunset the party breaks up, and the men leave while Quickbeam is left to watch over the new saplings and welcome them to their new home. Several other Ents visit during the night and Treebeard arrives near dawn to greet the newcomers. At long last, the future of the forests has become a little brighter.
