Thank you for another successful Back to Middle-earth Month! In March, we had nearly 150 fanworks posted and over 300 prompts available for adoption.

We would like to thank our mod team: [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower02 and [livejournal.com profile] indy1776 for leading the event this year, and [livejournal.com profile] angelica_ramses, [livejournal.com profile] dawn_felagund, [livejournal.com profile] huinare, [livejournal.com profile] marta_bee, [livejournal.com profile] mirach_ravaia, and [livejournal.com profile] rhapsody11 for helping create and run the event. [livejournal.com profile] huinare was also the mod in charge of the [livejournal.com profile] b2memsupport comm and [livejournal.com profile] indy1776 was the tagging mod.

We especially want to thank our volunteers: [livejournal.com profile] zopyrus for bookkeeping, [livejournal.com profile] lignota for tagging, and [livejournal.com profile] zhie for her work in the support comm.

We also deeply appreciate the work that our graphics makers did, for both participant banners and stall banners: [livejournal.com profile] broadbeam, [livejournal.com profile] heartofoshun, [livejournal.com profile] ladyelleth, [livejournal.com profile] lignota, [livejournal.com profile] mrowe, [livejournal.com profile] the_winterwitch, and [livejournal.com profile] zhie.

A few reminders:

  • B2MeM prompts never expire, and we encourage you to keep using the market stalls as a source for inspiration when you need it! Now that the event is closed, you are welcome to use any prompt you want without paying a farthing for it.

  • Likewise, the B2MeM community is open year-round for posting fanworks created using B2MeM prompts. If you are still working on a piece for a prompt that you purchased, we hope that you will post it or link to it on our community when it is finished.

  • We have B2MeM subcollections on AO3 available, for years 2006-2013 and 2015. B2MeM 2014’s works are in a separate collection. (Instructions for posting to AO3 collections.)

1. Several members have reported problems posting to the community using the "Post to community" link that is found at the top of the B2MeM community page. Doing so returns an error about a missing password. We have reported this problem to LiveJournal, and they have identified the cause of the problem and are working to resolve it. Unfortunately, it will very likely not be resolved prior to the ending of B2MeM. Until the problem is resolved, if you are one of the users affected by this bug, the best way to post to the community is to choose Post New Entry from the main LJ page, choose "To Community," and select "b2mem" from the dropdown. If you encounter any problems posting, you can reach the mods at b2mem.mod@gmail.com or via a comment to this post.

2. Our B2MeM subcollections on AO3 are now live! Besides this year's growing 2015 subcollection, subcollections for each year from 2006 to 2013 are available for those who wish to add works from prior B2MeMs. B2MeM 2014 works are in a separate collection. (Instructions for posting to AO3 collections.)

3. Last but not least, as we enter the final quarter of the month, remember that we still have a wide array of prompts on offer. Many prompts have already seen more than one happy buyer, and many others still await a good home! Peruse all vendor's wares via the 2015:market stalls tag, or check your favorite stalls for great buys by heading straight to the Masterlist of Market Stalls.

1. Our 2015 AO3 subcollection is open! Previous years' subcollections will be available soon in the same overall B2MeM collection. (2014's is available here as a separate collection.) Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lignota for creating the collection. ETA: Here's how to post to a collection.

2. We've had a report of a bug that affects posting to the [livejournal.com profile] b2mem community. When using the "Post to Community" link at the top of the community, it is possible to receive an error message of "Password Missing."

The workaround is going to the regular Post New Entry page and selecting b2mem from the dropdown menu. The entry should post fine and appear in the community.

3. We welcome anonymous comments from participants who do not have LJ accounts and do not wish to use OpenID. (LJ also allows log-ins with Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail accounts.) However, we require ‘anonymous’ comments to be signed. (For example, if your username on AO3 is FrodoFan1, then sign your comment with FrodoFan1.) Anonymous comments are automatically screened before they appear in the community, and unsigned comments will not be unscreened.

Now that the community has been switched to open posting, here's a couple of reminders.

1. More than one participant can buy the same prompt. There is no limit to how many people are able to buy a prompt.

2. Participants selling prompts should keep in mind that our rules state that “prompt fills are not gifts; they are jumping-off points for fanworks. They may or may not conform to your personal likes and dislikes.”

One of the questions we are asked the most during B2MeM is whether a participant's particular idea for a fanwork meets the prompt well enough to "count." This year, as in years past, the decision belongs solely to you, the creator of the fanwork, to decide if your response adheres closely enough to the prompt to serve as a response to that prompt. Neither the B2MeM moderators nor the "seller" of the prompt will make this decision, and we have never and will never remove fanworks for not being "enough" of a response to the prompt. If there is a prompt you like, but feel that you cannot meet all the requirements of the prompt, you are welcome to leave a similar prompt with the elements you like.

This is the masterlist of all the market stalls, listed by location and not by stall name.

Comments in the market stalls are now closed but you can continue using the prompts in them; no claiming is necessary.

Despite the overarching persona account being used this year, I’m [livejournal.com profile] indy1776 and I’m the tagging moderator. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions about how or what to tag, if there’s something you need me to delete, or anything related to this subject. Use of the bookkeeper is strictly voluntary. If you wish to keep track of your farthings on your own, that’s perfectly fine. If you wish to have [livejournal.com profile] zopyrus's help, you must post here.

The bookkeeper can help you with keeping track of how many farthings you have, help you figure out how many reviews or services you need to make to get out of debt (for example, if you offer too many prompts), and similar things.

If you wish to use the bookkeeper, please comment to this post with the following information:

Number of prompts offered:
Number of prompts purchased:
Number of reviews given:
Number of services given:
What you need help with (double-checking, debt, etc.):

Any further comments you make for help should be posted as a reply to your original comment thread.

At Back to Middle-earth Month 2015: Tharbad’s Greenway Spring Faire (the Middle-earth Marketplace for all you need), writers, artists, and other creators of fanworks are invited to challenge each other to create fanworks during the month of March! Because this is a spring faire, you will spend and earn farthings as you participate throughout the month by posting challenge prompts, claiming challenge prompts, and leaving reviews for other participants.

Other Things

You can find a list of the market stalls (prompt pages) listed by location here.

The prompt posts will be up in the middle of the week.

The B2MeM community is on moderated status until March 1 GMT. This way, if you complete a fanwork early, you may post it without it showing up before the event begins.
EDIT: The community is now in open posting.

For moral support and conversation, please check out the [livejournal.com profile] b2memsupport, the unofficial support community.

We need several graphic makers to create banners for us, both participant banners (and icons) and to create small banners for the individual market stalls. When you create them, please email all banners to b2mem.mod@gmail.com.

Participant banners:

~ must have "Back to Middle-earth Month 2015," "B2MeM 2015," or "B2MeM '15" somewhere on them.

~ Any size banner is acceptable. Icons should be 100 pixels by 100 pixels or smaller.

~ You must have permission to use any artwork or photography that you use on the banner/icon. This means that any artwork or photography used must satisfy at least one of the conditions below:
  • The artwork/photography is your own work, or you own the rights to the work.

  • The artwork/photography is in the public domain.

  • You have written permission from the artist/photographer to use her or his work, including making modifications, such as cropping or adding text.

  • The artwork/photography is clearly labeled with permission to use the work for nonprofit uses, including making modifications, such as cropping or adding text.

  • Screen captures from the movies are acceptable.

~ Any artwork or photography used must be suitable for all audiences, i.e., it should not include nudity, blood/gore, or anything more than mild sexuality (hugging, kissing, etc.).

~ Files should be saved in .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF file formats. Please use the Save for Web feature (or its equivalent for your software), if available, to keep file sizes manageable.

Marketplace stalls banners

All stalls have banner creators; thank you for volunteering!
These also need to follow the above rules for graphics, save naming and the size. Stall names do not need to include B2MeM 2015 and they will be assigned so we don't have duplicates. Size should be 100 high pixels by 400 pixels wide. Please either leave a comment here or email us at b2mem.mod@gmail.com if you are interested in creating these banners.

Middle-earth Marketplace

It's nearly time for Back to Middle-earth Month again! Remember, all Tolkien-based fanworks are welcome!

Due to the limited amount of moderator availability this year, we're running a Middle-earth prompt marketplace. Each stall will be themed to a location where you can leave prompts dealing with that location. (The characters do not have to be from there. For example, you can leave a Frodo in Gondor prompt in the Gondor stall.) Anyone can leave a prompt and anyone can fill it.

More details, the rules and guidelines, and the market stalls will be available shortly.

I just wanted to give a couple of B2MeM-related updates, so here goes!

  • The ebook for the 2014 event is still very much in the works. I have all the pieces and just have to put them together. I am very regretful over how long it is taking; I was poised to finish it and then decided to step up to coordinate the HASA Rescue Project, which pretty much derailed everything else fannish I was working on at the time. Now that the Rescue Project is winding down, I can hopefully take the final steps to produce the ebook. The hardest stuff is done; I am really, really close, which is all the more frustrating! :)

  • As some of you may know, I am in graduate school for like forever working on my MA in Humanities. Well guess what?? I am finishing this year! \0/ But ... preparing to write my Master's thesis means that the commitment B2MeM requires just isn't something I can shoulder right now. I will need to focus this spring on finishing my final course and finalizing my thesis research. [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower02 and [livejournal.com profile] indy1776 will be stepping up this year to co-coordinate B2MeM and I am very, very grateful to them for taking on this commitment.

  • The 2015 event is in planning, and an announcement should be forthcoming here soon. Please remember that if you need to reach the B2MeM mods, the best way is by emailing us at b2mem.mod@gmail.com. This account auto-forwards to several of the mods (including all of the coordinators) and so is the best way to get a quick response.
